can i dunk cakes while its fruiting?
    #19297262 - 12/19/13 09:43 AM (10 years, 2 months ago)

hey guys so ive harvested some nice mushrooms off my pf cakes but ive noticed that alot of my cakes are producing very small fruits that already have torn veils (I would say some of them are like a half inch). Through a bit of reading on shroomery ive gathered that this may be happening because of dry substrate. Ive been very good about misting and fanning so i dont see how this could happen but im just wondering if i can dunk my cakes even with mushrooms on them in hopes of re hydrating them and putting a stop to these tiny fruits?

If you dunk them, pick the fruits or they will abort from the water.

How is the humidity in your FC ?

You could also try injecting distilled/sterile water into the cake

Tap not distilled and iit would be easier/ more effective to simply sit it on a saucer of water over night.  They like to get there moisture over the entire surface area and not main line it lol

wrong, the water will not abort fruits for a dunk. Be really careful of the pins, your finger will abort them.

he needs to mist his cakes more often, also OP take a picture of your SGFC and your cakes for us or you're not going to get good answers

Never inject water into a cake, that's asking for failure. Distilled water especially, distilled water is absolutely terrible for anything except a spore syringe, Distilled water is completely devoid of any dissolved ions so it acts as a solvent, removing nutrients from anything it touches because it want's to have some ions dissolved in it.

There is nothing wrong with injecting cakes with sterile water.  they just Don't absorb it instantly.
a saucer with water will work, try not to let the water touch your fruits water logged mush suck
also Don't completely dunk your fruits they will stop growing.

I mist at least 3 times and fan usually 4 or 5 times a day. i harvested a few mushrooms off another cake yesterday and although they werent as big as i expected my mushrooms to get they were about 2 inches long with pretty decent stem thickness. anyways, heres a pic of my setup and a few of the mushrooms im talking about that seem pretty small

Injecting a cake is old info. Sterile water is not necessary tap water or bottled spring water would be best. People used to do it, You do it really slowly a CC or two at a time not a whole syringe all at once. It's not nearly as good of a method as just putting them in a saucer(bottom watering) or giving them a heavy mist, or dunking them between flushes. Injecting a cake is a good way to make sure that cake gets waterlogged and stops producing. Don't believe me spend some time on the search engine and see other peoples results.

I wouldn't dunk if you have fruits I would wait. If they're are pins on your cake it's not going to stop them from growing...

Might just be luck of the draw with using spores. Your second flush might be better. I would pick them all off after the veil pops, leave any pins that might be forming and try not to disturb them give them a dunk for a 4-12 hours. You don't have to fan more than you mist. Your SGFC looks great though (it does have holes on the bottom right)

Misting and Fanning.
This is a source of much grief and 100's of posts a week here. Misting and fanning is not at all complicated as it needs to be. In general you'll mist your cakes until they glisten(yes they can even with the verm on them) and then fan right after the mist. You can mist your cakes directly and you should. When you notice the cake is no longer glistening you can mist it again and then fan. This occurs on average of 3-5 times a day. Don't worry about sleeping or being gone 12 hours. Just do it when you're around and don't forget about it is all. Fanning is not FAE it's only purpose is to relive the high RH air so that the cakes can get a kickstart on evaporation.

FAE
This is a phenomenon (Fresh air exchange) in a properly built SGFC this is constantly happening. The perlite is naturally cooler than the surrounding air this moves molecules closer to eachother as the lose kinetic energy. This creates low pressure which pulls air up through the bottom holes. As the air moves through the perlite it picks up humidity and keeps the chamber at or above 90%RH. This occurs naturally without the fanning and is why we like to have no fans in the room and is also why fanning after misting is not a replacement for FAE.

You would need to fan several times per hour.

I've never had pins abort from a dunk ever
same with most other people.

If it's near a window, it's enough light for cubes.  Other species require more light.

Don't roll with pins, it will destroy them.  You can put a small handfull on top of the cake, then keep that wet.  You can also dunk a cake with pins.  It rarely hurts them.

I have never agreed with this.

Nor do I.

However, you can dunk a cake with pins.  I'd skip the roll in dry verm though as it can damage the pins and cause them to abort.

People used to get invitro pins back when they used incubators in total darkness too.  Cubes just want to fruit and often do so spontaneously regardless of conditions.

yup, pins will survive a 24 hour dunk.

they are all pins(no matter the size) until its mature and the cap opens to sporulate.

Yah your other thread got the "dunk even with pins on it" message confused by discussion about whether to even "allow" a jar to get to the point with pins or not, which was kind of moot for you.

Don't roll it this time, however - just dunk it.  I found when I dunk/rolled one with pins, the pins didn't push the vermiculte off their caps very well and it was very very hard to clean off afterwards, plus the caps didn't grow to their beautiful standard either.

You can roll it afterwards for the second flush.

its alright top dunk and roll a cake with pins. the dry verm layer should not hold back the pins from forming. I buried cakes in a planter that had pins on them under inches of soil and they pushed through with no problem.

Always dunk and roll after birthing even with pins

I was talking about the fruits, not the pins.
