How loose should grain spawn be?
    #19294705 - 12/18/13 06:56 PM (10 years, 2 months ago)

Because, even with the soaking and boiling in gypsum they're still stuck together tight and unshakeable.  What other things can cause this?

do you strain it and let it dry from steam coming off after you simmer it?

I like it sit for at least an hour after simmering, stirring and moving it around every few minutes. Usually laying it out on a cookie sheet

If the grains are clumped up, you didn't rinse them first.  Try following the grain prep tek.  You'll be able to turn the jar upside down when you remove it from the pressure cooker after fully cool, and the grains will separate and fall apart simply from turning the jar upside down.

I've had clumping even when I thoroughly rinsed before. Possibly from simmering too long, or even certain brands of seed can be more sticky than others.

Some people say the cracked corn in some WBS causes stickiness too.

A little stickiness isn't the end of the world. But a thorough rinse followed by a soak in hot water (I like to change my water to keep it hot) and a gentle simmer and a thorough drying will result in perfectly separated kernels.

You are giving us very few details.

I would think that over-boiling caused this.
I don't think you want it to reach a boil in the first place. My only experience is with WBS.

I meant OP said he soaked and boiled.

It's so vague...

If he said he soaked for some odd hours and put it on the grill till it just began to simmer, then removed and air dried w/ occasional steam release, then we would be able to figure things out.

regardless of the grain, even with cracked corn in wbs if you rinse well and make sure your grains are dry you won't have issues

It doesn't matter what i think of you...all that matters is clean spawn

Idk, if I let wbs  come to a rolling boil, it will be sticky regardless of how clean I get of.

OP, are you using rye berries or WBS , or what?

If you rinsed them until water came out clean, you likely heated for too long.  do you have a lot of burst kernels?
