Phoenix Potential
    #19296885 - 12/19/13 07:26 AM (10 years, 2 months ago)

Aight, this is just an idea I'd like to discuss, please try not to get hung up on technicalities.. This isn't fucking Harvard, this is a sub forum for the main forum of the shroomery. (:

In every person lies tremendous potential, and nearly every person gets no where near this potential..unless what was accepted as self is destroyed, burned. What remains is of course always the essential you, but once destroyed you may be reborn with a previously unrealized (a potential) trait about yourself you never knew you had.

Breaking old patterns, burn the old ways, a constantly emerging Phoenix. Intelligence is malleable, physical attributes..world view, understanding, knowledge..all can be improved, all worked on.. Mental state and health..

The potential!
The Phoenix like potential, destruction as an act of creation.

Thoughts? Once "grown" how impossible does it become(without the help of psychedelics) to discover and unleash your maximum potential?

What stops growth to begin with but rigidity, your own satisfaction?!

We know nothing!

Research humanistic psychology and maslows hierarchy of needs. Its all about reaching full human potential.
Its not impossible but many cannot get enough ducks in a row to begin the transcendents

Sure about that?

People seem so dissatisfied with changing once settled, I think this is why the ego became defined. To describe that which says enough, I'm good, really I am!

And ego crushers like "rock bottom" and shocks to perception such as are enabled  with meditation and psychedelics  and observe the conversation, remembering half the time your thinking your actually listening, ( t. McKenna taught me that)

Maybe this function of the brain is important, but that doesn't mean it's all important.

burn not what is of value!

the phoenix (figuratively speaking) is constantly arising from the residue of the past and the energy of life.

when you add life to memory the wings spread.

when you just let habits rule at the lowest ebb of energy, then you fall into the ruts.

Metaphors of flaming destruction of the "ego" or of habits miss the point entirely; sure the phoenix can rise again, but the premise ignores the value of your experiences, lumps all of nature into a pile of crap that you have to get rid of like industrial waste, and represents a yearning for a final solution - which is not a sustainable approach to anything.

Humanistic psychology - including Maslow's hierarchy - is a primarily theory-driven effort to improve talk therapy.  Maslow's ideas didn't come about via the scientific method and while they may ring true to some, they aren't demonstrable by any stretch of the imagination...

Search for "Maslow's heirarchy" + "evidence" or "criticism" and see what you think of it after that...it's a neat idea that has never been subjected to any kind of rigorous testing.

I don't think it's impossible...though we do seem to solidify as we age.  I've met many grown people who seem to have had some success following spiritual paths that involve meditative practice - as have I.

Not to say that I'm anywhere near unleashing the maximum potential of human existence, nor that I've attained some kind of realization; rather, when I compare my experience of life now to how it was before I started practicing Buddhism, the difference is staggering.  Similarly, if I compare how I am when I take a long break from meditation and dharma study to how I am before/after that break...it's like night and day.  I did set the bar rather low in my early adulthood, though.

Even in the very small way that I've been able to engage it, the practice of Buddhism has opened my mind and heart in ways that I simply couldn't have imagined before.  I believe that it does this by allowing me to let go of things that obscure the true nature of our experience.

Cool, man...I apologize if that came off a little harsh.  Often things look like science that aren't; I felt the need to clarify.

Thinking of past failures thinking that's who you are is complete idiocrasy IMO.

You can still do whatever you want.  The path is always there.  If you don't reach the finish line but die trying is still better than wasting away in depression IMO.

Haha, yes.  "I'm working to be free of my ego"...well, who is getting free of who?  The rejected aspects of oneself and the one rejecting are both ego.  In my experience, neither self-aggression nor narcissism have got me any closer to realizing human potential. :peace:
