cactus noobie question

I dont know too much about growing cacti, I have a couple that somebody gave me and told me they were peruvian torch grown from seed, but i was never able to identify them.
I thought they both had 8 ribs but one of them has 9 ribs. How come most of the pictures i see of trichs are 4-6 ribbed? Is it normal for seedlings to have alot more ribs? What factor decides the number of ribs, is it genetics or environmental conditions or what? For some reason i think i heard that 4 ribbed cacti are the most potent so will my 9 ribbed one be weak?
Also how big does a cactus typically need to be before it can be identified (reliably)

It's mostly due to genetics. T. peruvianus and T. cuzcoensis usually have more ribs than other species, often starting with 8 or 9, but 7-ribbed adults are the most common IME. Also, young specimens often have a rib or two more than adults. That '4-ribbed are the most potent' is 'shamanistic' hearsay, I wouldn't want to comment on that, but you shouldn't worry much about that. 3 year old seedlings could be big enough to identify, post a picture of them, we'd probably be able to at least tell it apart from the common 'lookalikes' (cuzco etc.)

The white stuff in the soil is Leucocoprinus mycelium that popped up after i watered it yesterday.

Yup, looks like typical T. peruvianus to me.
