Help with possible contam ID
    #19283828 - 12/16/13 01:08 PM (10 years, 2 months ago)

So i have a fruiting chamber that is going great, mycelium is doing great and first pins started to show, but two days ago some greenish-grayish blotches (mostly grayish) appeared, and i cant tell what it is.

I ruled out cobweb because it grows slowly but it doesn't look like anything from "common contamination" picture faq.

This little peace was scoped out, no larger than a dime (and that was the largest part) and photographed. The colors are a bit distorted because it was photographed under room lighting, so have that in mind.

The rest of discolorations are no larger than a needle tip and its not widespread (99% of the cake is snow wight)

any insight would be much appreciated.

Thx.

p.s. Any additional photos can and will be provided.

Some additional info:

Rye was colonized in 4 jars, 2 were done much sooner than the other 2 and they were left waiting, on opening they had the same grayish tint (only on the top, nothing on the sides and bottom) but then i believed its just older mycelium, i extracted the gray myc with spoon and proceed to birth the jars, the smell was fine, mix of mushroom smell and damp air (so i wasnt concerned at all). Rye was mixed with perlite in 1:1 ratio and myc has propagated quickly trough entire tube, and quickly made everything white, just as soon as it started to pin this blotches appeared.

q: if it is a contam but doesnt spread is it wise to let the cake fruit and harvest the mushrooms?

q: my sterilization process was really well done, could it be a contaminated spore print/syringe? Im asking because i would expect any contam to win and not let myc colonize jars.

If you really want to rule out cobbs 90% then you should try the q-tip test (put some h202 on it and rubb it on the mold gently) if it melts, it's most likely cobbs (what I read on these forums, but I'm a noob to this hobby so a grain of salt may be needed haha)
As for the speed of the cobbs growth (to what I understand) isn't necessarily faster than myc, cobbs just have the ability to colonize different parts of the same sub then join together to make a large colony, and as a result, it's speed of colonization/spread appears to be faster.
(Someone correct me if any of this is wrong, would like to know if my knowledge is growing or if I'm stepping in the bullshit)
Hope this helps in some way.... good luck bro:grin:

Thx for help, i dont have enough experience to be 100% sure but still dont think its cobweb, the blotches are shrinking in size and there are A LOT of pins growing... here is a photo from two day ago, i hope this may help telling what those gray spots are

Looks real good man. But now seeing that, I think either it's reacting to the contact with the cotton because the one on the top middle in the pic seems to be most prevalent under those cotton balls. And yeah your right it doesn't look like Cobbs to me. Have you looked up pics for green/blue mold and compared?
Hopefully some one else can comment.

Maybe cutting (not say it's what you should do... just a possiblity) the discoloration out of the sides and remove the cotton puffs cause that really looks like the source. But not sure if doing that is worth the trouble.

Ok, i collected the strange parts with a spoon and filled the holes with perlite, i also cut short the cotton balls now its all neat and tidy.

The pins are now swarming and the smell is like it should be, strong mushroomy!

I will update if there is any change in contam, but for now its all good, thx for help.

I would also add the smell is moldy-mushroomy. but nothing rotten, foul or rancid.

It's bruising. Not sure what's going on with the bottom half of that substrate in this pic
Did you salt half of it or something?

Bruising? That much? What could be the cause of that?

White color comes from mycelium and white perlite. Other colors i have no idea (thats why im asking here  )

I need advice on what to do with this cake? Throw it, eat it?

It happens when the substrate gets severely dehydrated. It should start to go away after you soak it.
