I imagine that if you poured them deep they could work as a slant. Might have a slightly shorter shelf life though.

the jars were given to me and colonized at really low temps but as soon as they got into my place they perked right up and took right off, very whispy colonizing when i got them

well it's been 31 days since i inoculated my first agar substitute so here"s a quick recap i started out making my brf/water mix

inoculated them with cube spores and transferred the first clean growth

let those colonize and used one to inoculate a steamed grain jar with a wedge
and one i squirted water in the colonized spice jar
sucked the ater up and inoculated another steamed jar
a week after i shook them, the one with the wedge was farter along and was colonized in ten days but i didn't trust it as it spit out some funny rhizzo's after full colonization, the other jar colonized fine fully and has been g2g'd for a mono tub
i had also recieved some colonizing jars from a friend of APE and coloumbian rust spore, both have since been g2g'd and some spawned already
i now have 20 jars to work with and over 20 cultures all past their 3rd transfer and out of the fifty dollars i set out with still have 20 qt's worth of grain left and since poo is free my fifty dollars has turned into about 30-40 qt's of grain spawn with more then enough cultures to last me the year and i haven't even got the chance to get a clone yet and i had to put all my exotics aside because i got no room and no time anymore so all in all i could have either gone with a couple boxes of cakes and yeilded a couple oz's or put the extra work in and steam grains and brf cultures and end up with around 40 qt's of spawn.....i think i made the right decision

i didn't actually ditch it, i spawned it but i'm certain that it was a bacterial contam, it shot off a couple of long single strand rhizzo's which usually points to bacteria so i just spawned it to a sub that was under field capacity and i'll be putting it outdoors when it's done. i could probly fruit it because it looks and smells fine now but i need someting for outdoors this spring anyway, but i got another cambo jar almost done Quote:

so the jar u spawned with bacteria to a sub under field capacity..i have also done this, and after a few days, it smelled fine (coir/verm/chxpoo). i have no way of doing outside stuff now (6 inches snow on ground) so i cased it, mainly because I'm just started out with casing, making my own 50/50+, but before i cased i wondered if dunking it would be of value to rehydrate a bit...? its one of those small buckets (2 qts total). i'd assume consolidation would b in order?

yeah i give it time to fight the bacteria and i don't bother dunking, bacteria thrive in wet environments which is the reason i did my sub under field capacity in the first place, if it looks fine by the time you finished consolidating and it's pulled away from the sides of your container you can just pour a little water around the edges and give it a heavy mist on top, but a drier sub and some sunlight and consolidation will take care of bacteria for the most part as long as it is't horrible like bacillus infested grains, mine colonized fine just didn't look right when it was done

what i got left and here's my other issue, as i'm trying my best to stay with in the fifty dollar mark i'm not buying any new tubs for these, i have my old pan mono with 8 holes as you can see below but the holes are at the 3 inch mark i believe, so i may only have about enough room for a 2.5 inch sub
and as you can see in the first pic i removed the pvc and my cultures are stored and i'm getting this thing ready for fruiting

You screwed up right from the git-go . I looked over your budget, and saw how much you spent on jars and lids. I wouldn't consider adding $18 back to your budget CHEATING with the understanding that you could have gathered up more than a few pickle jars and used them.
I know that they are not designed for the abuse we subject them to in the long term, but in a pinch they will work well enough that you can save for other items.
This thread blows my mind. I am amazed at how anyone with proper reading can very easily get into the extreme costs of bulk for as cheap as this. You state (not recommended) because the truth is that you have experience in this field before trying to be a tight-wad. Your knowledge certainly has a certain undefined value.....However everything you are doing is simple, and you make it look simple. Anyone can benefit from that!
But Thank you! I guarantee someone new to the hobby can certainly gain quite a bit of insight as to what a determined and financially impaired individual can accomplish.

Whippy you've changed your avatar in the last 24 hours almost as many times as cronicr In all seriousness tho, I love this thread, it embodies many things I have done, and continue to do. Growing can be done on a budget, or at a smaller scale, which allows one to save up for big ticket items down the road.
