Maintaining proper RH while adding fresh O2?
    #1929609 - 09/18/03 05:38 PM (13 years, 2 months ago)

Hey folks, A FOAF is adding an air pump to thier fruiting chamber that uses perlite....Should they put the pump on a timer, or should they let that sucker run all the time? If the timer is the way to go, then give them an idea as to how often/long I should set the timer to.

Another question.....Should I pump the air strait into the chamber, or should I add an airstone, and a glass of water to the end of the line, or does it matter?

The consern is pumping too much fresh air into the chamber, causing the RH to drop too low.

How long to run a system ......
This depends alot on your ambient enviro conditions . If you live where it is hot and dry ... you may need to run it more than most , if cool and damp all the time ... run it less .

Cousin IT uses ten gallon fish tanks for his set up , he went and got one of the TROPICAIRE humidifier air exchangers at Petsmat , 20$ it will give good humidity in a 55 gal tank .
It may be worth your time to try one out . I will try to add a pic so you can see what it is .

This was the test set up , since he has added two more tanks , and a pump that is meant for an 80 gallon tank , only opens tank 2-3 times a day to fan , must cut holes in bottom of tank to make 100% hands free operation .
Hope this helps
Good Luck

im using one of those for my casing chamber too... having trouble keeping the humidity in the high eighties though, rply better for cakes. i think what im gonna do is buy a couple of those air-line valves that split the tubes so that if the RH get too high i can switch the valve and have fresh unhumidified air flow through too

Hey folks, thanks for the replies....Eloc_666, that link you gave me churned out about three more link relating to RH and air pumps, good stuff.

I believe Hanky made the following statement...
Quote:

yes, you will still need the perlite....or use hydroton, the perlite provides the bulk of the humidity, the main reason to install a unit like this is for air exchange, usually you would fan out...this unit exchanges air without fanning and maintains high RH.with the benifit of introducing clean humid air...not just the air in the room being fanned in.

That statement alone answers a lot of the questions I had about this project.

Hey Tripndicular, that petsmart device you wrote about, is that about the same thing as an air pump/ air stone/ water bottle thingy?

Or do I misunderstand how the device works? Does it have an air filter?

ganja
don't know what kind of set-up you have but make it as simple as possible ( my experience ) perlite w/ some water and fanning and misting twice a day works well. if you can't do that an air pump w/ a bubbler on a timer 3 times a day works well ( need an exhaust vent, hole, w / a filter, tyvek is cheap and works well) - bottom line is humidity and fresh air. good luck !

Thanks for the tips DSD. My FOAF has tried the hand fanning thing in the past and was beat down three seperate times by the cobweb mold. So thier looking for ways to eliminate the vectors. Any tips on how long the pump should run at a time?

one way to work it out is to find out how many liters of air a minute your pupm puts out....decent aquarium pumps will have it written on the box...them consider how many liters you terrarium is.....again it should say on the label when you buy it....if not then guesstimate the volume or measure it with liquid.
then if your pump moves say 50 liters of air a minute and your rubber maid is 40 liters then your going to get complete air exchange in less than a minute....so get a decent digital timer and have your pump come on for 1-2 minutes every 3-4 hours or so.i imagine that would be more than adequate.

Have trouble keeping RH up .....
Not a problem for Cousin IT , had to add a timer to keep RH down a bit .
Depends on time of year , but set timer for three hours on , two hours off , this seems to keep thing stable .

Does it have a filtering device ?
Yes it has two , one in the bottom of the pump itself , and one in line that I added for extra precautions . The inline one cost $1.99 , change it out every three to six months , depends on time of year . In the summer I change it more due to higher dust levels in the house .
Keep peroxidated water in it to fight off water contams , distilled or inhalation water to keep down solid build up .
The only problem is ..... no holes in bottoms of tank , means must fan once in awhile to remove co2 build up , but constant air movement aids in that .
IMO , is a great , trouble free device , low maintenance , cost effective , cheap , easy to replace .
