Is there any benefit to weight-lifting?

All types of lifting increase testosterone, but the greatest increase is anything involving quads (upper legs).
Benefits are also fat loss, increased cardiovascular system, the ability to eat a lot without gaining fat, lower blood pressure, heightened self-esteem, etc...

Well, yea any exercise really, people mainly weightlift over cardio because they prefer the exercise and want the muscles. It's like asking whether jiu jitsu or krav maga is better for you in the long run.

Yeah
Increased bone density and better posture come to mind right off the bat. Running won't do that for you, not like lifting will.
More muscle = more support for the bones

Oh yeah, I forgot about that. You can prevent osteoporosis by weightlifting, because your bone increases in density 1% each year.
If you do the right exercises (back, squats, deadlifts, and ab workouts) then you can also strengthen your core and your back, which other forms of exercise don't do as much. People who have bad backs are actually encouraged to lift.

This is awesome. I'm very young and my back is terrible. I have a kettlebell and I'm gonna do some researching but do you have any recommendations or tips?

I had to shovel away 3 feet of snow drift to leave my porch the other day. Lifting certainly helped make it easy. Same goes for other tasks around the house like bringing in some water/groceries, moving furniture to clean the carpet, moving to a new house, etc. Everyone I knew over 20 who wasn't working out had some back issues and knee issues, "feeling like they're 40". Along with lifting I also do a daily modified version of 'sun salutation' yoga routine. It's short, great for the spine and works to warm up my joints/muscles. Be sure to spend many hours checking out proper lifting form. A lot of the info out there is wrong so try to compare different methods... you can get a bad back from lifting with poor form. Here's something for deadlifts : Those guys got squatting and benching vids too - should you take up the barbell.

Think about proper lifting and long term adaptations. Minimal upkeep will allow you to squat off of a toilet when you are old, for you will have a adapted core. Squats are important if you ask me.
Think about trying to reach over your head when your back is starting to hunch from old age. You might think about muscle upkeep when you are young in order to prepare for simple daily tasks when you are older.
Unless you want a nurse wiping your ass for you.

lifting weights is great. ive been doing it consistently for about 3 months and am already in such great shape. you never hear people saying 'working out is ruining my life'. work out and you wont regret it.

Yes, for back you should be doing squats, deadlifts, rows, pullups, pushups, abs, things of that nature. Go light your very first time and make sure you get your posture completely correct (especially for squats and deadlifts), or it will throw your back out and fuck it up even more.

I disagree. Running long distance deteriorates your body. Sure there's benefits to running but if you want to look and feel healthy start weight training. All my runner friends run to compete. All my gym friends train for health. I would say 90% weight 10% cardio is perfect for me. Mostly sprint and olympic lift...I don't use a single machine in my routines anymore. Machines don't give you true strength.
By weight training you're increasing the size of your muscles. More muscle mass means higher BMR/calories burned aka faster weight loss. Combined with eating a healthy diet you're going to stay around a sexy body fat % and look great. Looking good will make you feel great and give you confidence...you'll get compliments and hit on like crazy.

Why don't you lift some iron and find out? That will give you the best answer. I've been doing it for near on 7 years and am pretty sure I would start feeling ill and depressed if I stopped for any prolonged period of time. A life without lifting sounds unimaginably horrible to me. I don't even look at it in terms of benefits, all I see are the MASSIVE drawbacks to NOT lifting. To me, lifting is simply a necessity, like food or sex. I don't know how 'normal' people do without it. If you start lifting regulary, you might see what I mean. You're doing your body a great disservice by simply not using it. Your muscles were MEANT to be used.

Normal people: NO
If you run ~5 miles.... you're fine. Marathon runners are a whole different ball game on how it effects the body. It puts incredible strain on the body.
Same thing with body builders... these people aren't average in any sense of the word and push things far beyond where the body should be at. Weight lifting is supposed to enhance your life, not destroy it. Bad form and lifting too much weight will destroy your joints.

*I didn't read all the responses so my answer may be similar to others* Why not just do both? Cardio for the increased caloric deficit and weights for muscles/bones?
