Fried Chicken, anyone?
    #19294914 - 12/18/13 07:48 PM (10 years, 2 months ago)

I found these clusters yesterday in a raised bed under a magnolia tree. There were many more but they were already past their prime.

They are only a couple of inches tall and have no ring. The spore print is white. They have a hearty thickness to them and remind me of short, compact, pale Ringless Honey Mushrooms for the way they grow so tightly clustered together.

My guess is that they are Fried Chicken Mushrooms but I've never heard of them appearing in mid-December and I'm not that familiar with them.

Any ideas? Thanks.

I seriously doubt they are a Lyophyllum.

They look right like lyophllum to me.

Lyophyllum looks like a pretty good guess to me.  Not sure how many species are going under the name L. decastes, however it's a name by Fries and probably does not occur in the US....The US version(s) are probably undescribed.

The ones I'm used to seeing have white stems and gills, like this;

I was under the impression that 'fried chicken mushrooms' refereed to L. decastes

According to Alan you are correct in your assumption.
I never knew that they could look like that. :shrug: I thought they were all whitish colored mushrooms, I should study more...
