Fruiting Pan Cyan question
#19294419 - 12/18/13 05:54 PM (10 years, 2 months ago) |

My pan cyans are almost done colonizing two big rye grain jars and I'm a tad confused on what to do after... Do I crumble it up, stick it in a "container" and put casing on top?(50/50 peat moss and verm will do yeah?)
Or do I put the crumbled up mycelium in a tin plate and then in the container?
What are the options?
your sincerely, human

Here is a nice casing layer for 2 quarts- If you don't have this, verm+ peat should work
1 qt. Sphagnum peat moss 1 qt. Vermiculite 4 TBSP lime 1 cup crushed oyster shells 2 cups water

First of all, you need to spawn your colonized grains on a pasteurized manure based substrate for best results. When that substrate is fully colonized, you will need to apply a thin pasteurized casing layer. You can do this all in a tub designated to fruit ( mono or dubtub), or you can do it in trays and place them in a fruiting chamber, like a SGFC or greenhouse.

So you used straight grain for your spawn? Just curious because I have pan goliath on the way and it will be my first attempt with them and I'm still a little unclear on all the proper parameters for the best results

I am where Deadzygote6 is. I tried to inoculate pan cyan on brown rice and have almost zero growth, meanwhile my APE done at the same time has been 100% colonized for a few days now. Is Brown Rice just a bad fit for Pan Cyan? Is Rye berry or grass seed necessary? There is plenty that talks about what bulk to use for Pan Cyan, but not a lot on what to innoc up.

Weird because mine is doing jack and shit on Brown Rice. Literally only a couple of grains show any mycelium meanwhile my APE grew like crazy from the exact same batch. No signs of contam. Are the spores just useless? Should I try to transfer the tiny bit of mycelium I have to agar?

just remember they love poo, 2 inch sub depth, case when its colonized fruit as soon as you case stop misting once pins form, once i stop misting i like to add water to the sub via a syringe

Would bottom watering like in violets tek work for this ? Just use a syringe to add water to the bottom of the container little by little?

yeah depending on how your fruiting it though, if you were say to use something like a mono with a liner theres no need to bottom water, the top is more important IMO

Straight brown rice and verm will do if you plan to spawn to bulk with manure later. If you don't want to have to spawn to bulk a mixture with manure and a few other things works well. My signature has more details on how to go from inoculation to fruit in the same container. I call them "pan-cakes".

My next trials after the holidays are going to be with grass seed. Watch for updates in my sig.
On a side note: Pan cincts and Pan fimicola (thanks cronicr) love agar made from water soaked in grass seed.

Check my signature. You could always spawn those cakes for bulk (I would imagine....I have never tested this theory though).

Pans and cubes (frankly most mushrooms in general) can all be started on grain. It doesn't matter which grain- brown rice, milo, rye, millet, etc as long as it is a whole, non-hulled grain. But unlike cubes, pans require a manure based bulk sub for a decent yield. So start your pans on grain, then transfer to a manure based bulk substrate.

So when my pan cyans have colonized the jars I'm gana mix it with pasteurized manure (stick in container and into pot?) wait a week or so after I see mycelium taking over the mix and add casing while putting it into fruiting chamber? Am I missin something?

I've found, Everything is a Crap shoot on BRF. Give it tons of time. It could be growing in the middle out, not at all or just as slow as you see it.
and of course, it could be contaminated and won't grow any further. Unless you see contamination, just throw it on a shelf behind some books(so you can't see it by accident), mark a date on your calender at least two weeks away, and check it again. Then rinse and repeat my suggestion based on the updated info.
Good luck to all who grow wanna see more updates and teks from Pans

It isn't brf it is brown rice. It isn't contaminated either because it would be super apparent with the containers and amount used. Just not growing. Chalking it up to Ms syringe I guess.
