Re-using jars?
    #19294691 - 12/18/13 06:52 PM (10 years, 1 month ago)

Everything I'm reading says that if your jars are contaminated you should throw them away asap.  Does this mean you can't dump out the spawn, scrub the jar with bleach, and re-use it?  It's a shame to go through all the work of making filters if I have to toss them now.

the contents get thrown away..not the glassware!
if bacteria is the problem: just open, dump, wash and reuse
if mold is the case: PC(to kill spores),dump in trash(or bury it outside), wash and reuse.

You don't need to pressure cook mold.  Simply put the contaminated jars in a pot of water and bring it to a boil for a few minutes and then shut off the stove.  When the water cools enough to stick your hands in to retrieve the jars, dump them out and re-use.

I always re-use the jars as for the lids you can buy new ones, I PC the jars sitting upon the lids for 30mins

Don't let the infection get so bad. Molds are usually quite visible in a jar. Most of the time you can catch it before it sporulates and dump it quick

Like RR said too. The spores are only on the surface the boiling water will penetrate surface deep quickly

personally there are times when I'm simply too lazy to dump the jar out before the mold develops.

Or even forgetting about jars for a while, come back to them and realize they're full of a foul black/brown slime. yuck
