coir to water ratio for pasteurization
    #19294646 - 12/18/13 06:43 PM (10 years, 1 month ago)

I recently acquired a large brick of coir from a friend who didn't want it anymore.. however, it's kind of broken apart and I'm not exactly sure how much of it there is.

My question is this: if I wanted to do a smaller tub experiment, how do I know how much water to use for pasteurization if I'm not exactly sure how much coir I'm putting into the bucket? I know normally about a gallon of water is used when using a full brick and some verm, but what's a good standard when you have no idea how much coir you're really throwing in? Go by weight or something of what you're using?

Thanks.

I would just slowly add water and let the coir expand.  I would perform a feild capacity test on the coir each time I was about to add water.  Once I reached feild capacity I would stop adding water and then either fill quart jars or oven bags with the stuff and then I would pasteurize the stuff the old fashion way.

Oh and don't forget to add verm, and if you add to much water you can always add more verm.

It says right on the brick of coir package usually.
Try one part search and one part engine.

one brick of coir + 4.5 quarts of water + 1-1.5 quarts of verm

1/3 recipe weighed out ~215 grams of coir + 1.5 quarts of water + 0.5 quarts of verm

If using no Verm use 4 quarts of water.

You should always check for field capacity regardless of your measurements. Mass is always a better tool for measurement than volume of ingredients.
