What are you guys paying for your grains
    #19293878 - 12/18/13 03:45 PM (10 years, 2 months ago)

I've bought some rye berries from the health food store a while back and that's it! I'm spoiled. I can't go back to wbs. Rye berries are so much cleaner and easier to work with. Anyway they were $1.29 a lb at the health food store and I just refuse to pay that.

Well I have called every place I can think of in town and I can't find them anywhere besides the health food store. I finally found some a couple towns over for about $0.75 a lb. It is a little over a hour away. I guess I could drive over there and stock up while I'm there. Is that a good price? What are you guys paying?

Also I found some wheat berries here in town. They are really cheap. They were less than $0.40 a lb. Do any of have experience with wheat berries?

A little less than $.50/lb for rye berries. Run to that wheat store. I pay more for wheat than I do for rye.

You guys must live in cheaper places than me.  I can't get anywhere near those prices around here, but I don't need that type of bulk yet.

I don't know.  I usually just buy up ten lbs at a time and have enough for a few grows.

It works out to 1 cup (dry) rye per Qt jar. I do it by volume.

I've never used Wheat because it's more expensive for me.

$15 per 40lbs WBS
maybe not as good as rye berries but it's cheap and hasn't given me any trouble

I get organic rye berries for $0.99/pound at the local year-round farmers market.

Just bought them to switch away from WBS, so I haven't used them yet.  But I have high hopes for them.

Yeah, I pretty much lucked out with this one.  When I lived in the PNW, no farmers market had anything like this.  Most catered to the yuppie crowds with mostly overpriced organic veggies in a very limited selection, or they were the local hispanic market and the only grains on the shelf were grits or flour for making torillas and tamales.  Which, incidentally, was great for when I wanted to make a batch of tamales to freeze back.

The farmers market just outside of Atlanta is supposedly the largest in the entire USA.  Can't verify it, but it *is* freakin' humongous.  In their dry bulk section, I can get millet, rye, and BRF for way cheaper than any other retail outlet.

I just hope that I can do these grains justice and grow something great from them.

I get organic rye berries from my grocery store down the street for 89 cents a pound.

If you buy a bulk bag it's even cheaper per pound like 50C
