1 month post inoculation WBS
    #19292873 - 12/18/13 11:17 AM (10 years, 2 months ago)

These quart jars of WBS were inoculated 11/20.
Originally there were 7. One was lost prior to shaking due to contamination.
So here are the six remaining jars. Every couple of days they are checked, and each time it looks like maybe a few more days, but they're definitely taking their time.

^Is that concerning?

I look forward to hearing some feedback from you all. #6 seems to be the lagger. I have pointed out some areas of concern that I would like a more experience opinion on. Last but not least, can the areas of solid growth be expected to colonize more or is that as good as it gets?

Thank you all

I know I will probably get blasted here by some people who do things a little bit more "by the book" than I have done but I do have lots of growing experience with good results

When I used to have this happen, I used to still take the 90% done jars and case them with my fully colonized jars. This never once backfired on me and they always finished colonizing quickly

So in a nutshell, I suggest moving to your next step with the jars where they are. I think they are ready to rumble

Noted. To my understanding, spawning before 100% colonization increase odds of contamination? I'd gladly wait rather than risking it.

Perhaps with some more input I could end up preparing substrate tonight and spawning tomorrow.

Can I get some input on the areas of concern?

Just from a pure science standpoint, yes the risks of contam are higher but I have done this 30-40 times and never had a problem

It's up to you though, sometimes they just stall out and the move from the jars to your fruiting chamber give them the increased moisture and air exchange that they need.

Plus the casing layer, when prepared correctly will keep the contams out

Sounds reasonable. Although my previous reading has led me to believe that casing layers are not recommended for cubes?

For a first attempt of growing bulk, verm/coir is being use for the substrate. If the tub is clean and covered then that should just as effective as the casing would be for contamination right?

I always cased my cubes and never used a bulk substrate

bulk substrate is good if you want to increase your yields but it isnt necessary

And yes, if you tub is clean and covered and your bulk substrate is properly pasteurized then it will be fine

Thank you a lot. There is still much to be learned, but this is a wonderful place for it!

This forum is a great place to learn but as you gain more experience you will understand that a lot of people go over-board here with some of the things they do

The best thing is to get your own feel for things and what works in your environment and make subtle changes based on your own personal results
