fair enough, but, i keep hearing about stuff that has more or less of the more preferred grains as well as too much cracked corn and/or sunflower seeds.

Steer clear of:
Cracked corn and husked/cracked sunflowers.
Find an "economy" mix, and it usually is your best bet. The less sunflowers the better, but some don't hurt. More than likely, the recommended "red cardinal" bag will also be at any other store, just with different package. Economy mix is the key word for what you want. Don't pay extra for the fancy brands with the window on the label. You are going to feed it to a fungus.

Lowe's has this specific product, slightly more expensive than the rest, and although there are slight amounts of peanut, cracked corn, etc. it is primarily a small clean seed blend with out any dark colored husks. Stop by your local store and take a look at it.

Yep: It has hulled sunflower seeds. Id stay away from them for the same reason as excessive cracked corn.

This looks more inline with what most use from the generic red bag. Yes, there certainly is cracked corn AND peanuts in both. I endeavor to get most out, but I am sure some make the final cook.
Cost prohibitive? Use what I pointed out as a guideline for generics. Generics usually don't make the web page. Most people don't realize that their outdoor birds are very aware of cost per pound, and will fly south the instant you try and pawn off some of that joke-no-name garbage.

Sorry if I'm going to hurt some feeling but I get anything without corn. But I just found gypsum and bought a 50 pound bag so my feeling might change about corn. I really doubt it but it might.

I have been using finch seed, and removing all the hulled sunflower (1/3 of bag). The economy mix is a great place, with great common info. Using other various mixes requires a bit of alteration to the basic rinse/soak/simmer guidelines.
Proper hydration of the grains being used is most important, no matter the choice in bag.

ive always used grain and have it down to a no fail science now. im kinda anxious about getting into WBS because of all i hear about sunflower seeds and cracked corn. thats why im trying to find the best i can get. id like to just order it online, but ive yet to get a really straight answer on the varietys ive found. these are the options i have online, with free shipping and all http://www.amazon.com/Morning-Song-1022526-Year-Round-40-Pound/dp/B004G5YKTC/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1387411658&sr=8-1&keywords=wild+bird+seed
http://www.amazon.com/Wagners-13013-Four-Season-Wild/dp/B002KSJPL0/ref=sr_1_4?ie=UTF8&qid=1387411669&sr=8-4&keywords=wild+bird+seed+40
the grain i usualy get is out right now and said they wont be restocked untill mid january. that, and its still 41 dollars for 50 lbs so id like to make the switch to WBS so long as its feasible and i get my method down without too much fail. otherwise, i gather the rye is worth it for peace of mind, but i just cant get it right now.....

I buy mine at Publix supermarket. It's about $4.00 for a 10# sack, and there's no cracked corn in it. I do end up sorting out a lot of sunflower seed, but there's very little of any other floaters in there. I'd say 90% is useable after sunflower seed removal, and I save that to bring to the park and feed to the birds while I walk my dog, so I don't consider it a loss.

I just bought this at Tractor Supply, if you got one around - Royal Wing. No corn, few sunflowers, wheat, millet, heavy on milo. 11# for $5.99. I wasn't about to spend 3 bucks in gas to try to save 2, so I bought it. Works well.
Peace, FT

Of the two you asked for:
http://www.amazon.com/Wagners-13013-Four-Season-Wild/dp/B002KSJPL0/ref=sr_1_4?ie=UTF8
This should be fine. I havent actually used the brand but everything in it is good. Its actually exactly what I was looking for too (the seed i buy now has the exact same ingredients) so I have to say thank you cause with free shipping this is cheaper to order online lol. Ill be ordering some. Alot of people will say to stay away from cracked corn but for me ive never been able to find whole kernel or no corn locally or online. And by local I mean within 2hrs drive! So with that information in hand ive had to learn cracked corn and Ive developed my recipe so its really no problem. If your clean and careful, like every aspect of mycology, your good to go. Perfect moisture and rollin around like bb's every jar
EDIT: and before anybody starts tryin to help me out with what brand at walmart or this other fuckin place, please understand that I have been to nearest walmart, lowes, homedepot, tractor supply, John Deere, A place that called itself a milling operation that looked at me with dumbfounded faces when I asked for rye grain and coir, Sams Club, Petco, and any other mom and pop petshop, hardware store and grocery along the way. They simply just DONT have any without cracked corn and several of them (Amusingly the large chain ones) have told me that it is not made with whole kernel. Bad luck all around lol.
So unless its a direct online link to purchase one without penuts and either whole kernel or no corn at all I give up lol. Like I said I already got the technique down so Im happy either way.
