World War II veteran from Belarus Konstantin Pronin, 86, sits on a bench as he waits for his comrades at Gorky park during Victory Day in Moscow, Russia, on Monday, May 9, 2011. Konstantin comes to this place every year. This year he was the only person from the unit to show.

Regina Walters, moments before being murdered – Robert Ben Rhoades was a truck driver/serial killer that liked to pick up hitchhikers and torture them for a while in his truck before killing them. One of his victims was a 14 year old runaway from Texas named Regina Walters. Walters’ remains were found in an abandoned barn in Illinois. However, her disappearance wasn’t connected to Rhoades until after Rhoades was arrested for abducting another woman. When police searched Rhoades’ home they found this photo.

Not all of them. And they take a long time. I have my default max width for images set to 640px, so maybe they are just massive images and overwhelming people's machines.

Now most of them loaded. Yes, sand dune pic is insane, I guess there must be some editing/colour correction involved, but still jesus that is a fine view.

I've seen wind farms down below while flying across the country, so I knew they were large machines, but seeing people standing on one really sets the scale.

I like looking at space pics, the infinitesimal expanse that is space and beyond is awe inspiring. Fun to look for distortions in light from black holes too

National geographic even questioned the photo's authenticity before publishing it. Can't remember the details but I read the photo being explained, the white spots are patches of grass and something about the dune/sun positioning gave the effect of that flat land looking dark but the sun lighting up he dune

I don't trust National Geographic. They wanted to use a photo of mine, I even filled out a release for the photo, and they never used it after I told everybody they would. Made me look like an idiot.
Also, I used to work in a graphics/imaging shop and we would use National Geographic's photo lab to do our color slide developing, and they were always late in delivering.

By the way, has anyone ever read National Geographic for the articles?
They usually have NG at the blood bank I go to, and it's great to look at pictures of Macchu Picchu or vultures or something while you're having that pre-bloodletting coffee and biscuit.

Apparently the picture of the Turkish official teasing the Armenian starving children with bread has been questioned over its validity:
(And I am not a denier of Armenian Genocide)
"The technical giveaway is the pixels. Were the photograph genuine they would have to be homogeneous but they are not. They are leaning in various different directions. Otherwise the analyst concludes that the man's right arm does not belong to the body. It has come from somewhere else. His right leg seems to have disappeared altogether. The boy sitting on the ground on the man's right is not clutching anything at all. The forger simply did not take enough care when cutting the paper around the fingers in the photograph from which his figure was taken."
