I finally found me a good deal on rye berries. It turns out all my local feed mills sell them for around $0.40 a pound. I was calling them asking for rye berries and no one knew what I was talking about. All the feed mills call them rye grain. Keep that in mind when calling around looking for them

I buy wheat from the local pet shop at £1.80 for 3 kilo, which will make at least twelve of these,> ~400g colonised grain per jar.
 ignore the label.
each one of which will make one of these,>

from which I would expect at least a dry ounce, two on a good day dependent on the usual factors. with enough left over to play with for one or two of these,>
Just for the mischief.

31¢ wheat 43¢ rye (there are some more expensive varieties, this is the cheapest) 49¢ bird seed (I can find it cheaper but loaded with sunflower, the decent wbs is still already annoying enough as is) 69¢ grass seed (cheap simple rye grass. other varieties are stupid pricey) 72¢ brown rice
It's not all about price-per-pound though! The two on my list that are most expensive are also my favorite by FAR...

Actually that turns out to be very related to the importance of this topic. Grains have various expansion ratios, and it can shift some depending on how you prepare it. (see above link)
But for the most part they'll be a little over Double their original volume.
