Quart jar is a quart jar, right?

Seems as if the cheapest jars, (I was surprised, I figured still closer to 15 bucks but less like 8.99) are the Wal-Mart® only brand that they have, they come in a box, you really can't see what they look like.
Any one have any experience, bad or otherwise with non ball or kerr canning jars, in the quart size? I know to use Ball for PF Tek
I also keep all the odd shaped quart jars from spaghetti sauce that my mother sends me home with that she gets at Sams club or whatever, may eventually give those a try just for shits and giggles

no personal experience with walmart brand, but I have used old jelly jars (not homemade jelly, but smuckers, etc from grover) for LC's and a spaghetti sauce jar from grocer for grains once in a pinch. I used poly as GE filter. just checked me hard drive for the pic, but i guess it was when I began so I don't have the pics..

Mainstay, the WalMart brands, suck. Buy American,Kerr or Ball. That's just my preference, but whatever works as I can understand working within a budget.
as for reusing sauce jars, that I don't recommend. They're made to go from the factory to the table and that's about it. The sealant on the lids is temporary and won't withstand multiple PC runs. Same with the walls, mason jars are made specifically for cooking and freezing able to withstand repeated use.
it takes a lot of neglect to break a mason intentionally, sauce jars on the other hand can crack without warning.
just my experience though yours may differ, I only over caution you because picking a glass shard SUCKS

Wal-Mart (left) ball (right)
The Wal-Mart brand is made of thicker glass but of less quality. It also lacks the graduation marks on the sides, I didn't like that. The Wal-Mart brand is also wider than the ball brand and slightly taller, they still fit in a PC ok but 12 can't fit into the cardboard tray/box that the ball brand comes in which is annoying if you keep yours for moving jars around. Aside from that they still work, this one has been sterilized a few hundred times. I now pass them up and stick with ball brand. Look through your local free-cycle for free ones, you could end up with a free PC too if your lucky!

I'm using about 19 or 20 different kinds, some from the 50's that I don't even worry about. I just reuse them and don't think about it. Of course the blue ones stay in boxes.
I wouldn't reuse the spaghetti sauce jars unless they say "Mason" on them, but they aren't full Quarts usually.
Try not to shop at Wallyworld.

I love American made vintage jars! Here's one from 1910 that is in use this very moment! It a Atlas brand square jar with the original "H over A" logo. In present condition it's worth more than a case of mainstays! Lol

Hmmm, there has been some good input in this thread, and some surprisingly old mason jars being used for shrooms
