Hole in cap + Slow Growing pins? Any ideas
    #19292200 - 12/18/13 07:59 AM (10 years, 1 month ago)

Okay so my two biggest pins have been going for 5 days and are still pins   I dunno what could be going on here.  Most of the time by now, my pins would be full mushies by now.  And they've developed holes in their caps.

I mist 2-4 times daily and thats the most I can do.  Sometimes the overspray in the tub takes 4-5 hours to evap, even with 2-3 minutes of fanning twice.  I'm running a impeller humidifier in the room as well, because its winter here.  (Facing away from FC)

I hope this slow growth is because the mycelium is getting ready for a large flush.  I have probably almost 100 pins already on 10 cakes.

So I noticed more blue bruising on some of the cakes.  On the cake with the big pins above too.  I understand this is from lack of humidity/substrate water content. The cakes all still have water droplets on them though.  4 HOURS after misting.

So is it possible to have a high humidity terrarium, a wet verm layer, but dry cakes?

Im dunking the one cake to test it out,  if the pins grow better, I'll dunk more.

Lol, no offense intended, but I think you missed the part about wet verm layer. How could I have a verm layer, without having dunk and rolled at birth?

It took 2 weeks to see pins though. I think they might have gotten dry in that time.

those look fuzzy, sign of needing FAE.  Is your SFGC elevated?

check you perlite and make sure it isn't clogging your holes on bottom, the holes in the cap look like they were from some water damage

As in it should be over the holes, not in the holes I take it?  I have that crappy small miracle grow perlite because they were out of Therm-o-rock

Im dunking that cake now to see if the bruising and therefore, slow growth, is from it being dry.

yeah you want course perlite , the small particles will clog your bottomholes which are the most important and it will drop your rh/fae

I just checked the holes and there's no perlite inside, so I dont think it's clogged.  I'm gonna get the cakes out and shake the perlite to make sure its not clumping.

Im gonna order horticultural perlite when I order my supplies for grain (Filter disks and what not)

I think my humidity is okay as the overspray on the walls hasnt even evaporated yet.  I'd think even with bad FAE, it would evaporate if the humidity was really low. Maybe I need a physics lesson...

if you got moisture on the surface of your cakes as it evaporates it gives you all the humidity you need, but something is off becasue i never have condensation in my sgfc's. theres no fan running is there?

Its not condensation.  It's overspray from misting that takes a really long time to evaporate.

I think I figured out the problem.  Shook my perlite and a puddle of water came flooding out.
