Help - Are these rye jars too dry?
    #1929199 - 09/18/03 03:48 PM (14 years, 7 months ago)

My ex girlfriend did up some rye quart jars. She first simmered the grains so they were softened and basically like cooked rice. She thought they'd be ideal. She then pressure cooked them about an hour on 15 psi. Now shes wondering if they are too dry. There grains do not look wet, yet they do not look completely dry. They are all cooked so hold moisture. Will the mycelium still grow? She just needs these to innoculate compost.
Thanks

Are you able to shake? Is it clumpy or does it shake freely? Your grain sounds perfect, mycelium will love it.
Man.. i wish i could get my girlfriend to cultivate for me... instead all she does is eat my stuff

Ok, well she thought they'd be ideal after cooking, and after PCing they looked ok. But now they just don't really show any moisture content, except some SLIGHT condensation at the tops of the jars. Otherwise the grains just look rubbery and cooked. They are slightly chewier than rice, but definately cooked and hold water. Will the spores germinate? Shes really scared here. No they are not clumpy but shake very freely. Woudl the only other option to inject some sterile water? Or should she be worrying about nothing. Also, how much do you guys inject per quart jar? 2 ccs? 1?

Well I just read someones post under "Rye Berry Recipe" and saw that someone cooked theirs until they popped. These were cooked until chewy, but few exploded. She is very worried these wont work. Any other input?
