The best way to a good life is being born with a silver spoon in yo mouf.

Seriously, every man and his dog had a college aducation, you need a PLAN and the stamina to stick with it or you're fucked.

what exactly is the so called good life? everyone thinks about it more or less differently until we haven't defined it. This is true with many common words lot's of people don't bother even think about theirs original/defined nature.

I would define the "good life" as having available to oneself (and those loved) all the amenities desired to allow for the actualization of one's dreams.  The subjectivity of it all is held within the idea of what one's dreams may be.

Community colleges are far less expensive than universities and often provide a better education for the first 2 years of study.  This can be especially helpful for those who are unsure of what career path they wish to pursue.  I had a great experience in community college, and went on to complete my degree at an excellent - but terribly overpriced - public university.  I spent a minimum of time and money at university because I knew exactly what I wanted to study and had learned enough to begin upper division work immediately, thanks to my experience in community college.

I don't recommend dropping out of college unless you have a clearly superior alternative career path.  College is an excellent way to develop your mind and skill set while exposing yourself to various fields of endeavor; even if you're not sure what you want to do next, applying yourself in college generally pays off later.  It certainly has for me...but not in any way that I could have predicted going in.

I strongly recommend taking a break for your own sanity and then considering whether community college would suit your needs. :nyan:

And thus begins the  reverse-fusing of our one-dimentional understanding, and adds ever-expanding perspectives, in depth and number; splitting our perception, and in so doing, seemingly irrationally, creates yet more one-ness, with all that ever was, is and will ever be, streching across the infinite, inunderstood concept of everything, percievable and not.

every day i read the rankings its different degrees that are supposedly on the top demand...

some of those rankings list IT degree as one of the top stable high paying degrees. then i go on tech forum to find out that the it field is oversaturated with people with degrees and theres no real demand for them...

how the hell do i find whats in demand and whats bullcrap?

i also dont want a degree that will get me nowhere after 4-6 years of study

Every degree graduates more people than there are jobs that utilize that degree.  The bottom performers of every major will have a very hard time getting a job in their field.

The only job that will always be in demand is one where you have to work hard and long and get paid little.  Beyond that, its going to be competitive and college is one means of making yourself competitive.  College, more often than not, is not job training.

I am looking to go into natural resource management (the field my father has made a career out of.) According to him, tons of people will be retiring and there will be jobs ... according to my teachers at the community college, there are presently few jobs. Conflicting information!

Looking at the data from the government student loan website, says that graduates in the field will slightly outweigh the industry needs.

Something like:

10800 new graduates to
10400 job openings between 2011-2020

Does that sound like reasonable odd's, or would I be best off disregarding this kind of data and hope for the best.

What do you guys think?

One word for you "VICE"....if it's not a VICE you will not make money anymore.  There is no transfer of wealth, the last transfer of wealth that took place in this country was during the Great Depression.  It does not happen anymore because of "bailouts".

That being said...I have no respect for College...they simply train you to fill a job position...not to be financially independant.

SEX
DRUGS
GAMBLING
ALCOHOL

Those are the only places to make money....that being said you do not have to "break" the law.

Remember during the Gold Rush of 1849 the people who made the most money were not the prospectors but the suppliers.  There were times when a gold pan would sell for over $1000.

So lets take Drugs for example.  You cannot sell them, you cannot cultivate them, but there are people who can (ie Colorado, Washington).  So a new line of products, fertilizers, grow systems, blah blah the list goes on.  This is where the major need will be, and will likely make you more money than growing or selling Marijuana if you are successful.  So therefore you have to find a "niche" that pertains directly to one of these VICES and then you will find the money.

Another example...SEX....prostitution is illegal...but the owners of Backpage.com laughed all the way to the bank with it.  They supply a service that borderlines legality, and they bank off of it.  Because the need will always be there.

So figure out a way to make money off SEX, DRUGS, GAMBLING, or ALCOHOL and you will be "in like Flynn".

Those four things make life better when you are sad, broke, helpless, and they make life better when you are rich, happy, and content.

Just my opinion hehe.

Yes man!! Ive been finding the same thing, I read up on these jobs they list as top 10 or top 20 but then go to an acutal forum where people in the field are talking about it and they say they'e been trying for X months or years to get a job. Ex: counseling, school psychologist.

From what Ive seen with friends and family.... obviously engineering and medical are safe routes. Id say community college nursing courses might be a good way to go. Dealing with sick and dying people can be hard im sure but its also surely inspiring and awakening. ANd in demand. ANd teaching is a pretty easy route. You can become a teacher with any degree but if you get your BA in EDU then you will graduate certified, have completed a internship, and should be much more qualified to get/maintain a job. Teachers get summers off.

im not talking about illegal ways to make a good living

i mean a legit (or at least legit on paper) way to make a good living?

with the cost of college increasing every damn year i hear more and more people finish a degree and then end up working for mcdonalds because they cant find a job right away but have a shitton of bills to pay ..

Yea it is the second best way and backup if the first best way falls through. Must go for math based programs however. Corporate world is now more left brain than ever.

Ideally you go to a top 10 university.

Best way is to become an entrepreneur right out of high school. Pretty tough socially at first I would suspect.
