Right now Im trying out coco coir plus verm 2 parts coir 1 part verm. I'm using wbs with a spawn to sum ratio of 1 to 3. I previously tried a mixture of rabbit poo, verm and coir but got the gree mold. Any input is appreciated.

it is supposed to grow best on compost. so try that? i'd do it in a bag, not in something open. poo/spent straw is probably what I will try in the future.

What about compost in a mono? I'm also curious about straight straw?

Hey Mr.Jake (could that possibly from adventure time? lol), You didn't sterilize that first mixture you made right? Also, was the green mold on the coir, poo or both?
The Growing Gourmet and Medicinal Mushrooms by Paul Stamets suggests that you use manure based compost Good luck!

It started in the rabbit poo, Particularly the balls that weren't broken up.I did oven pasteurization @170 Degrees but I did not use a thermometer I now have one and have been following roger rabbirs jar pasteurization tek. My name was actually just a random invention lol

Commercial farmers compost chicken poop together with straw. But any poop slash organic matter mixture would probably work.

I have a few batches going now, more experimental than anything. One is all horse poo that was used as mulch in the garden, and another was hpoo/straw that was the same thing. The mycelium is boosting.
I do have a huge compost pile right now going though of hpoo/straw/chicken bedding that should provide a more composted substrate so we'll see how that goes.

I have a chichen coop that I bed with pine shavings. Could I add some pine/poo to the straw or would that throw of my ph? Also I pud diatomatious earth in with it wich I suspect would hurt mycelium. Ile probly just take the straw and mix in some horse poo and let it sit a couple weeks.

Once it's composted it should be fine, and I doubt that DE would harm mycelium.
It's also not quite as simple as mixing hpoo and straw and letting it sit gotta turn it, water it and really Compost it. Button mushrooms are secondary composters, meaning they digest substrates that have already been composted.
If you have horses you probably already compost, so just pull some compost out of your pile, pasteurize and inoculate!

Yeah you gotta make sure to turn it! Plus it's a good workout if the pile is big enough.

My friend who works on the lab of a agaricus farm tells me the substrate used is mainly conposted chicken poop with composted straw. They have used composted horse shit in the past as well.

I currently have a pile that could be used as compost BUT it has lots of hay and pine shavings mixed in. Would that be a problem? I may go for it. Also I thought of making a chicken wire framed box. Fill the wire box with horse, chicken poo and straw. That way I could water and turn easily. Thoughts?

it probably would not be a problem, you should try it though. Once the pine is composted, the natural anti-fungals in the wood should be composted as well.
