Oysters, Reishi, or Shiitake
    #19290494 - 12/17/13 08:34 PM (10 years, 1 month ago)

I have only worked with cubes so far but I have the opportunity get some Oyster, Reishi, or Shiitake prints.  I have always wanted to give a go at edibles.  Which of these mushrooms would be the easiest jump for me to have a go at?

Oysters if you have the proper air exchange setup.

Reishi will grow antlers in tubs.  Forrester did a nice job with that.

Shiitakes take time but are easy.  If you have access to spawn bags you could fruit them out in a SGFC pretty readily.

So bottom line, none of what you listed is difficult but they do require different equipment and grow parameters.

:whathesaid:

forrester got me going on reishi antlers in tubs and it paid off.

oyster have grown, worth it, easy, even with neglect.

lions mane is kinda hard to keep calm with my experience on rye so far, about to go to unsupplemented hwfp and gyp, lot off success there (from what i have seen from other grows here), not quite as much as supplemented bags of hwfp but i dont have a LFH just a SAB.

What Jeff said.

You say 'grow from prints' but that isn't really the best method.  A liquid culture that's proven, or a wedge of agar.  Prints of edibles aren't usually taken.  Of course if that's all you can get... it's worth a try.  But it would be better to find some fruits at your local Asian market and clone them if you're starting out.

Oysters are dead easy.  Nearly fail proof.  Shitake are easy too, just expect to wait months.  Reishi I grow in bags that I never get around to opening.  They're pushing at the vent patch right now.
