Rye colonization question
    #19289476 - 12/17/13 04:48 PM (10 years, 1 month ago)

I've been growing mushrooms for about a year now and understand growing conditions and sterile procedure but I can't figure out why my rye won't colonize. I've used multiple syringes from a reputable vendor, waited for the grains to cool and inoculated. The grains were soaked for a few days, rinsed and pressure cooked at 15 psi for 90 minutes. I have an old pressure cooker and it may be slightly over cooking the grains because they come out much darker than pre cook. They also don't shake well at all. The water content inside of the jar leaves saturation marks where the grains touch the glass but no excess water at the bottom. The only other thing I can think of is the temperature of the room they are in. Its warm maybe 80-85 degrees. Last batch 4 jars colonized after maybe 2 months and the rest did nothing. I have 6 jars now that are at about 18 days after inoculation with no results. Any input would be awesome.

they probably started fermentation after a day how could you stand the smell?
Next time soak 4-24 hours then bring them up to a simmer/boil for ~10M then dry let them steam dry.(see the RR let's grow mushroom video for grain prep and the toilet paper test)

They should shake just fine, re watch the grain prep videos.
also some gypsum helps

and, take a better picture

Also the foil should be taken off of the lid after the PC cycle. Take a picture of your jar lids for us too, I have a feeling there's something wrong with them.

Just make sure the jars get enough air circulation, i have the same problem last week and i then change the lid with a plastic lid with bigger hole. Then it started growing.

And just a tips : maybe u should try to do liquid culture first then only inject it into jars. With that u will be stun by how fast it will colonize the jars.

Lmao you have a PC and spores. Get into agar. You will learn how sterile you really are and you will benefit alot from it.
