Can you use whole brown rice for a substrate without any vermiculite? And how would you make it?

im almost 1000% sure you cant. the verm helps space out the brf so that the mycelium can eat the food.

I've got a batch of that that I'm trying out right now.
What I did: Rinsed the rice. Cooked the rice with 3/4 of the water the suggestions said. 1 cup rice - 1 1/2 cups water instead of 2 cups and cooked for about 3/4 of the time the suggestions said 30 mins instead of 40 Rinsed the rice again Spread out the rice for 20 mins or so to dry off the outside a bit Added a very small amount of moist verm Coated the outside of the whole mix with half a cup or so of brown rice flour And then PC'd for 90 mins and noc'd up the next morning - 1 with LC the rest with spore syringe.
I was curious, so I decide to try it. So far it looks like 1 might be contamed. The rest seem to be going well at about the same pace maybe a little quicker as BRF cakes. I made them about 5 days ago. Took about 3 days to see anything and then in the last 2 days they are maybe 10 or 15% colonized. Sorry don't have any pics.
It is possible to do straight brown brice without the verm or BRF. The trick is getting the moisture content right without the outside of the grain being wet. I'd sterilize them a bit longer than a BRF cake as well. Most would just recommend doing PF Tek instead.

No problem.
I just did it, because I was curious and almost out of verm. Like I said most would just recommend doing PF Tek instead, but it is possible.

that's a recent TEK with whole brown rice, I don't recommend it, but you might be able to distill some good information from it.

Some good info on there
Almost surprised more people don't attempt whole brown rice.
Sidenote: I still did the dry verm layer on top like a BRF cake
