Installed PCI Express card, computer now freezes
    #19266391 - 12/12/13 03:28 PM (10 years, 2 months ago)

So I have an older dell that I need wifi on. So I got a PCI express card. First I used the install disk to install the driver. Then I powered off and installed the card. When I boot up the computer loads up I log on and it shows a driver being installed in the bottom right. All seems good then bam it freezes. Any ideas of what the issue is? I am right now installed all windows updates I hope that might fix the issue but I am kind of doubting it. I also did a clean install of windows 7. Before this I tried to reset the bios. I removed the battery, waited a while and then put  it back in. I don't think it reset though for some reason. Maybe it did idk how to be sure.

Any suggestions would be great guys. Thanks in advance.

I hate to say it but usually with new pci installations the driver is what needs to be updated, if you already did that and the thing is still giving you problems then I have no further suggestion. Your best bet may be to remove the additional card as it may inevitably be incompatible. Knowing the exact card installed and what motherboard might help. But it may be a defaulty card after all if you installed it and your computer turns on at all it is at least compatible. Definitely a memory issue driver issues give error messages hardware issues blue screens.

But then from that perspective if its a freeze instead of a blue screen it COULD be software. BUT usually a freeze is a processor overload of some sort i/o continues in a basic sense but all computing stops

Well I called the manufacturer of the card and they said they would send a new one.

If you have any more problems just look at the chip manufacturer on the card and try to get some current drivers for it (i.e. Atheros). If it runs at all, run Windows update and it may find more appropriate drivers. Good luck.

If you want to reset the bios in that fashion you need to pop the battery out and take a nickel and place it in the center and touch the metal perimeter at the same time for about 5 seconds. This grounds the battery terminal.

A nickel :orly: :ilold: No you do not have to put a nickel in the battery slot but if it makes you feel better you can, (it wont hurt anything) to remove any residual charge tap on some random keys but this is also not necessary except in odd rare instances just leave the battery out for 5 minutes not 5 seconds.

In almost every board I have dealt with, you only need to leave the CMOS battery out for about 10-15 seconds.. hit the power button on the board a couple times (if it has one) to discharge any leftover power in capacitors and blammo

I guess I could have tested it on my other computer that is newer. Oh well I guess well see if the new one works. If not should I try a PCI card instead of a PCIe  card or would that even make a difference? This seems way more difficult and a pain in the ass than it should be...

Or do a google search on the different kinds of PCIe cards that would be a good place to start to see which one will work with your MoBo. As well as making sure you have enough memory and in windows virtual memory or with nix flavors swap. From what you are saying sounds to me as 1 of 2 things either you had a bad card or not enough memory.

What OS is this?

Uninstall the driver for the card, reinstall the card and see if it shows up in Device Manager automatically. Look in Device Manager, are there any errors? If not, install the drivers for it again while it's showing up. If there are errors in Device Manager, right click and go to the properties and what error code is it? Did you install the chipset drivers?

Windows 7. I never could find the driver on there. I checked. Maybe I was looking in the wrong spot? I looked in device manager though. I don't have the card anymore they are sending a new one. I will update once I get the new card and if it doesn't work again I will try harder to find it I guess. How do I go about finding chipset drivers? Thanks Shroomism.

You wouldn't get hired too many times when the customer says, "What's that you're drinking there"?

The professional way to do it is to jump the pins to ground the circuit.

Seems like you know it all. I still wouldn't let you work on any of my machines.

No offense, people can be mighty particular about the ways things get done. Just ask anne.

You need to install the pci-e power plug onto the card, else it only works in 2d likely

if you dont install that power cable, dont expect it to work

it may boot, or it may run into windows before it fails

could be driver issue too... run linux :-)

could be bad graphics card too...
or bad motherboard/socket
