Coir... Pretty damn contamination resistant....

So, pretty much. Im trying to get rid of all my current projects for a fresh start in the new year with some edibles and what not. So what i did was take a brick of coir, put it in a USED large myco bag, added 4.5qts of water, and 2qts of vermiculite. I let it hydrate in the bag, then moved it to the tub once hydrated, mixed it all up in the tub, then added the 8 quart jars i had done a gtg on a few weeks ago. So pretty much, no pasteurization, no cleaning on the tub, gtg spawn, barehands. Lets just say it was not ideal, and i dont encourage anyone to do this. i was just trying to get all my shit out of the area so i can start fresh, i was honestly hoping for this to contaminate.
anyway, here is the results, so far. hopefully im not jinxing it.

If you did that in my house you'd create a human sized sentient demon made entirely out of Trich.

One of the main reasons to pasturize is it makes it easier for myc to digest

QFT, best reason to pasteurize/sterilize coir, the myc likes a cooked meal
Coir is so contam resistant that I'm almost ready to say that anyone who see's a contam before the second flush should just blame the spawn. Here is an example of why I say this. About 20 months ago I was doing the ol bucket tek. After mixing up my tub I ended up with a handful left over. I decided that rather than toss it in the mix, I would put it in a ziplock bag "just in case" I never had a just in case moment and this bag of coir floated around the house, from one room to the next.
That bag of bucket tek coir, which I exposed to open air, handled with my bare hands and that was sealed in a ziplock bag for almost 2 years, still has not contamed. No bacteria, no mold. I'm even thinking about tossing it into a tub just for the hell of it. Maybe on its two year birthday

I'd say it. I hydrate large blocks ahead of time and then cook it before use. It's sat a month wet before, just fine. Only time I've had a coir contam was due to coffee cross contamination giving a starting point. Coir might be nutrients but it's rough germination grounds.

ha, you should. would like to see the results.
stygianknight, have you used coir sitting for a month without rehydrating? I have 5 quarts that have been sitting for almost a week (foil instead of the normal lid still, but locked down with the ring so I imagine its rather air-tight) and honestly I might re-pastuerize just be safe, but wondering if I should dump em out and check field capacity/rehydrate too, or if that would just be a waste of effort...

Yep. The top layer can be slightly dry but a mix in is all that's needed.
