Favorite type of sawdust?
    #19287681 - 12/17/13 09:08 AM (10 years, 1 month ago)

It seems like alot of people around here use wood pellets for their sawdust blocks, which seems expensive, but understandable if you don't have sawmills in your area.

I am lucky enough to live in an area where I can get oak, beech, sugar maple, ash, aspen and a few different conifers. However despite all the choices I've always been partial to aspen. I was just wondering what other people are using and what benefits you think it has over other types?

until i can develop a faster way to deal with raw sawdust, I use hardwood pellets.  the sawdust is free, and the pellets cost money.  but the sawdust takes about an hour and half to process, versus an hour for the pellets.

edit: most people seem to like oak.  hickory is nice too.

I use hardwood pellets too. I would buy it loose from a sawmill, but I don't have a place to store a huge pile of sawdust at the moment.
Pellets here are $4/40lb, and I find that worth it.
When I have a place to store loose sawdust, I'll probably look for common hardwoods like oak and alder, avoiding fruit woods and softwoods.

I haven't tried very many, but I use pure oak, and most refer to this as one of the "superior" woods to use; whatever that means.

Once they get ground and dried I don't see much difference in the hard wood species.  Texture does matter though.  Fine sawdust compacts to tight and colonizes slowly.  A assortment of particle sizes gives a better consistency and seems to support more flushes.  I like Geneva hard wood pellets from Maine.  Their pellet mill is courser and if full of small chips.

I am a total newb at this, but I just picked up 20 40LB bags of 100% hardwood pellets for $1.99 ea. thats 800 lbs of wood pellets, and well, when you add water to it, it creates a lot more, so I'm set for $40 for awhile I think. nice dry in the bags. I've done the whole shoveling dirt, gravel, etc... I'm sorta liking the pellet in bags idea so far. but I'm a newb frankly...I am literally just right now using the pellets for running spawn, and making substrate out of it right now. it's a adventure. I still plan on using straw also, and right now am only attempting to grow oyster, but it's a adventure.

That's about half what pellets usually cost.  Nice work!  Where did you find them?

farm supply place in Michigan. I took the 20 bags they had. They probably thought I was nuts. I thought I was probably nuts actually, but I figured worse came to worse, I could use it as garden fertilizer for $40, so took the risk.
