It is an Amanita species, although im not sure which one the genus contains hundreds of species.

It kind of looks like Amanita porphyria which is a European species, No idea if it is native to Tasmania.

Stick around for a while and somebody with more experience in the genus should be able to help you with the species.

This may not be help, but could you not just look up the local mushrooms on line and find a picture mach?

There's not a huge amount of information about Australian Amanitas. Little grey ones can be tricky at the best of times. You will probably need microscopy to get anywhere with certainty.

Your best chance of an ID is probably to post it on mushroomobserver.org and ask Rod Tulloss his opinion. Or you could email Elaine Davison (who works on Australian Amanitas) and ask her.

If only it were that easy.
