Article claims there's no proof the majority of vitamin supplements do any good. 50% of the public takes a supplement. Have they been hoodwinked?

I think they have been overemphasized in our culture but that doesn't mean taking them can't help, I think they are good for boosting an already healthy lifestyle not meant to replace an unhealthy one.

Part of the article indicates vitamins + healthy diet is no better than a healthy diet.

The article doesn't claim that, it claims that some people claim it and other people disagree.
FWIW, the specific studies showed evidence that multivitamins didn't help with cancer and heart disease, nor did they slow cognitive decline in men 65yrs and older, and the third in preventing heart attacks... Apparently these 3 things are all that matters in the world and we can now jump to the conclusion that vitamins do nothing for one's health and are a waste of money... I think that's the media's hype story... Somebody is fishing for clicks on their website.
I'd never argue that a supplement is a replacement for a well balanced diet, exercise, good sex, and relaxation and... but my guess is some particular vitamins can be helpful in some scenarios not covered by these three very specific studies as well...

It mostly claims it. I did a quick search for multivitamin in google news and found all the top results were from various big name papers, all expounding on the same theme.
Did the multivitamin industry piss someone off?

Haven't you noticed lately up is down and down is up. GMO is good, organic is no better or even bad (expensive!). Vitamins won't help you, HFCS is the equal to cane sugar.
Meanwhile, as the general population is looking at their little screen and bashing out fluff with their thumbs, the spraying continues. Soon enough you will see who can provide seeds that will grow in the heavy metal high pH soil. Soon enough...

I don't know, but I've never had any expectation for my vitamins to miraculously keep my heart healthy or prevent cancer in the first place... Those seem largely influenced by the foods you eat, exercise, stress, and genetics, but I can say on an anecdotal level that I think the vitamins I take, including New Chapter - every man multivitamin and a handful of others daily have had a positive effect on my energy levels. I'd happily put that to the test and see if there was any truth to my perception if such a test was devised.

I take a fruity Pebbles Flintstone One a Day Vitamin and I can say with certainty that my energy levels are through the floor.
I would know being a natural foods supplement salesman for over twenty years. (made a small fortune )

I think taking a good multivitamin and this doesn't mean a Centrum that makes it through your bowels still as a pill is a good idea. Not as a primary thing but as a supplement.
Also something that doesn't get enough play is the importance of good salts, and the avoidance of table salt. Many diets are sorely lacking in trace minerals.

I'm not sure what your point is... Everyone has a different diet, and I eat a mostly vegan diet... The vitamins might help me more than you if I'm not getting all the varied foods necessary for optimum health... I try my best, but I think I perceive the vitamins help balance me out a bit... doesn't mean it will work for everyone

The real point is the propaganda BS of the mainstream media. Now here you are doubting whether you really benefit from something.
Fuck their nonsense every day. Turn off the TV news, ignore mainstream propaganda. This is the kind of thread that results.

Actually I agree, but I'm not arguing to ignore studies all together, just the sensationalism that the media hooks onto when they 'make news' based on studies... Often the two are worlds apart.

I ignore their BS. A real study wouldn't declare that vitamins are of no benefit. The recent Stanford "study" of organic foods was also pure propaganda BS. No reason to dig into it beyond that.

My point is that after 20+years in the industry I've come to believe that at least 80% of claims are bunk and 90% of results are placebo.
But it was a great career. I've probably used more high end vitamins (including New Chapter) as perks from reps than any human alive. My pee is still yellow five years after stopping. I never noticed anything generally. Thank god they were free. I figured it out once and it seemed I was taking about $300 worth a month.
I do think however if you do your research carefully there are some things that are of benefit for certain medical conditions. Beyond that eat good and low stress are the tickets to health.

Okay, say your statistical analysis was correct, in America there are 313.9 million people, half of them take vitamins according to the article, and 10% of them aren't experiencing a placebo according to you.... That would make 15.6 million motherfuckers experiencing an advantage.

Yeah maybe. Go for it. I still take some. Even if it's all placebo that is a great health benefit imo. Most of this stuff is way over hyped and wayyyyyy overpriced though imo.
And I'll never really know if they prevented something or not. Just don't break the bank is my advice. Spend your bucks on good food and drugs.
