Looking for help painting a scooter
    #19286659 - 12/17/13 12:01 AM (10 years, 1 month ago)

A real scooter, plastic.  Looking for help with this.

One thing to keep in mind is i am not in "the west" and brand names are often not found here, so things like actual types would be ideal.

so far the plan is to sand the surface and use a spray primer.  Looking to use acrylic paint on top of that, for ease of finding it and colors available, then clear coats on top of that.

I am new to painting, completely, but want to do it myself. plus not look like shit, its a brand new scooter.

here is the type i have: http://motorcycle.goobike.com/motorcycle/bike/stock_8701836B30131205003/

the general theme is nature.  so far my plan is to divide it in half with 2 themes, clean : dirty environment.  where i live pollution and dirty living is huge, so thats the idea.  my thought was have a waterfall going down the center of the front, and then have rivers wrap around the side/bottom.  one being green, blue and lush, the other being dead and dirty.

have not thought out the details or the back yet, but was thinking the green side having a farm and all pretty/relaxing style.  other side not sure yet, maybe a smog fill city.

so i guess i am wondering a bit about painting styles, using a brush.  i am no artist so blending/fading colors into each other i am not sure i can do that well, so i was thinking doing very strong, crisp borders...good/bad idea?  is there a name for this style?

what i am trying to say is i cannot likely do these:
http://leonidafremov.deviantart.com/art/SICILY-MESSINA-original-oil-on-canvas-painting-361489877

http://wallpaperswide.com/painting_2-wallpapers.html

but maybe more like this style:
http://thechronicleherald.ca/artslife/139970-karma-took-kulyk-on-the-old-spice-route

fishing for ideas/suggestions etc.  or good websites that teach painting like this.

Dear fellow shroomer, first off let me congratulate you for getting hands-on about this project. Once you start with it, you'll see it's great fun and awesome times.

Now about the technical aspects.

You have 2 different skills at play here. One is mixing a decent palette, another is applying those colors to your scooter. You have to google your own stuff about primer layers etc, as I've never painted on metal before. But once you have a primed ready surface these skills will apply.

Mixing your palette. This is a simple skill once you understand what you have to do. You can start with a few colors, and the point is to learn to mix say, 3 intermediary colors. Do this in glasses for instance, to have enough of each color.

Something like this:

Only you will be doing it in paint jars or plastic cups, as you need a larger quantity. Here's an idea of a color scheme for instance:

See how they gradually move from one color to the next, in steps? Count the distinct colors, and know that the artist had to pre-mix those before applying. I did the same when painting my walls. See on the table, the pre-mixed cups of color.

Basically your colors will be as good as your mixing (or paint buying) skills, and mostly it can be broken down to taking two colors, and making 1 intermediary in the middle, then another 2 intermediaries, between those 3 colors. 1 2 3 4 5. First you mix the 3, by mixing 1 and 5. Then the 2 and the 4, by mixing 1 and 3 and then 3 and 5, respectively. Hope it makes sense. Practice a few times, you'll get the hang of it. Before you even start painting, you have to have your palette pre-mixed, with enough of these to choose from. 3 intermediaries should be fine IMO. Try to stay on the edge of the color circle, as opposed to getting in the middle where the dull grays are. So mix red-violet with blue-violet, where all 3 intermediaries will be nice colors, as opposed to orange and blue where the 3 will be a dead on asphalt gray.

I'd mention value (light and dark) but I'm afraid your head would explode

---

The second part of painting your scooter is applying the color. This has to do with what kind of motions you do with the brush. Best for this is IMO, to practice long decisive strokes from your whole arm, as opposed to needy timid short flimsy strokes from your wrist. These are easy to practice, just do it far away from your scooter. Take any surface. Left over boxes, random paper, newspaper, and the cheapest paints or ink you have lying around, and practice your strokes and shapes. You'll soon see what looks good what looks flimsy. Mind your brush loading, load generously but without filling the basis of teh brush, as that will ruin it. This is best seen in video form, let me know if you can't find decent brushwork videos to learn from.

Practice these two skills (mixing intermediate colors and applying them) and once you feel ready, move on to your scooter.

For something simpler that still looks awesome and you might enjoy tremendously, I recommend looking at the art of John Lanthier. Gives you a nice idea of how you can combine these for something really trippy.

You can also go for your nice waterfall idea, just practice it beforehand on some cheaper surface, not directly on your scooter. ANy painting that has ever been created, can be replicated and learned from in this way. See what palette was mixed, then see how those colors were applied. Follow it stroke by stroke and blend by blend, and you will understand the process.

Repeating it is another matter

Oh and watch videos of muraljoe on youtube, the man explains everything and shows it too! Re-read this post several times to get it, it's a lot to take in.

Wow, thanks for that reply!  John Lanthier has a lot of pics i like the style of, will be using that basic style i think with different subjects.

I have to go to work, but wanted to add a quick note, this is all being painted onto plastic, not metal.  If that makes any difference.  I am in the process of searching out good primers.

I have also been practicing on old helmets, and i think you are right, the long strokes do look far better!  but some parts just require short/detailed bits.  i am a bit shaky so this is going to take some practice.

and thanks for mentioning about color mixing, i am having big troubles with this right now.  not so much mixing colors i like, but applying them properly.  for example a leaf might have 3 shades of green.  I can see it in a photo or painting, but getting those 3 shades into shapes on the helmet is proving far harder than i expected!

So far teh only thing i have gotten done that i am happy with teh color/brush strokes is the flowing water in waterfall and river.  The clouds are not too bad eitehr but need work still.

What do you think about highlighting borders?  should blue sky meet green hills together, or should a black (or...?) border be painted on at the end?

thanks again.

For seeing strokes, leaves, clouds, skies etc, please watch muraljoe on youtube. The man explains AND SHOWS exactly what he does to get a leaf, cloud, mountain, etc. Preactice everything on cheap materials BEFORE touching the scooter.

For painting on plastic, google and search, I'm sure you're not the first guy to paint a scooter, the info must be out there. Not sure if acrylics straight up as they are, will stick. You can always throw John Lanthier a message or something, maybe he knows, I've seen his doodles on everything

Long strokes for long objects, short strokes for short ones. What I am saying you should have both, and most beginners try to use short strokes for long objects, and so it ends up looking jagged. Here's what I mean with long strokes:

See how for the branches it's one long single stroke? Practice that for a while, practice your horizontals, verticals and also more complex shapes, one single stroke. See how Chinese calligraphers do it, at any size. One line = one stroke, then your kung fu will be strong

Mixing-wise, get some reference images and try to mix some palettes to start with, see if you get any issues, post pics we'll be able to give you feedback. But post pics for everything, not text.

Cheers and good vibes man, have complete confidence, you'll get an awesome scooter :thumbup::thumbup:
