So I found this video of this guy making an air purifier with a box fan and hvac air filter in like a minute. I'm just wondering if something like this could be used as flowhood in a small area like a bathroom.

Even if you leave an air filter in the room for a few hours and spray it down with lysol?

You'll get more contams with that filter then with a still air box.

Could use a hepa filter... then a still air box. Sounds good to me.
decent diy hepa w/ still air box vs nothing? go with the hepa set-up. thanks for the video, btw. didn't know they made 'particle counters' shows what I know...
Edit: Some bathrooms are filthier than others. But the consensus here seems to be it's a no-no. So make peace with your god and go with that. You could wash down every square inch with bleach, then later ammonia, then later something else. Clog all the drains, get your toilet really extra good, etc. Every. Square. Inch. That might make a difference.
In general you want a sterile surface. And sterile air. Makes sense, no? Anyone who's ripped up old carpet knows what I'm talking about. Piles. Literally, piles of dirt and filth under old carpets. No amount of vacuuming gets rid of all that shit.
Just fucking gross. That's why kitchens and bathrooms don't usually have carpet to begin with. But, I guess a carpeted closet, with that plastic 'carpet protector' stuff, diy hepa, then an hour later still air box...might be a good choice? Whatta I noo?
Or, if you're lucky and have one of those newer places with 100% no carpeting. Then you'll have all the advantages (such as they exist) of a bathroom without all the negatives of poo related contamination. I guess. Good luck! Thx again.

Why not? Is using a hepa filter a few hours before the still air box hurting something?

Not really hurting anything just not helping. Yeah it will slightly reduce the amount of airborne contaminants but not enough to make any difference. Still air box is used to reduce the air flow around your work, its the airflow that moves contaminants around and into your work. Hence why people say to turn off air conditioning, stay away from drafty windows, and what not.

BS. The bathroom is usually the smallest room in the house and normally has tile flooring making it the easiest room to sanitize and stop air movement. Plus you can turn your shower on hot and steam it up causing everything in the air to fall to the ground. I do all my sterile work in my bathroom and very rarely have contams.
As for the op, no a box fan filter cannot be used as a flow hood.

Some will jump at a $25 chance to 'slightly reduce' the amount of contamination they experience. Why we sanitize a room, in addition to our gloved hands and arms when working with a sterile still air box. I guess.
That's what I do anyways, been doing it for about 6 or 7 years. Mr. Big Shit over here, right? It's not that big of an expense and/or expenditure of enegry... and it doesn't hurt and/or helps a little (...and maybe more than a little).

Good eyes. Yeah, I wouldn't use it for a flow hood. Just generally to clean the air before doing sterile work...in a still air box. Edit: In the smallest, non-drafty, room you can find that has non-porous surfaces that are easy to clean.

Steam may fall, but heat and humidity both rise....meaning there are millions of contams being blown around while you work....plus the bathroom is the second dirtiest place in the house.
If you cannot afford to work in front of a REAL Laminar Flow Hood, a still air box is the next best thing.....not a bathroom, not open air, not outside......still air.
Do you scrub the bathroom ceiling before going to work?

Still air boxes are never sterile......that is not the point.....the point is to create a still air environment....it does not even have to be sanitary.

I wasn't suggesting to work in open air in the bathroom, I said its the easiest room to sanitize and control air movement since its usually the smallest room. I work inside of my SAB, which is in my bathroom. Telling someone to never do mycology work in a bathroom is dumb, its just as good as any other room as long as you're using a SAB or a flow hood, and it doesn't hurt that its the easiest room to clean.

I agree with this.

No need to clean the room if working in a SAB.....just clean what goes in it.
I work in a dusty room with 20 year old carpet and I have a dog and 4 cats.....and a very high success rate....being confident in your sterile procedure is everything.....lol

I'm sure you're right, I still clean and oust my bathroom before working though probably just out of paranoia.

I should be more careful with the term 'sterile' to avoid confusion in the future. Thanks for the correction. Not sure why I take shit so personally.
