Here's a recent video piece that WHYY public television in Philadelphia did on our farm. Though it might be interesting to some of you.

I really enjoyed that, even the other two segments, but your segment was really awesome. Its always good to see mushrooms getting more attention. I love the gigantic spent pile!

That's really great man! Very well done! I'm curious where you get your custom corrugated boxes?

They're from http://www.producepackaging.com The actual boxes are: http://www.producepackaging.com/Products_Detail.php?ProductID=31
The warehouse is about 45 minutes from us, so we pick them up every few months.

Great little piece on your farm. So you mention being close to the mushroom capitol of the world, and not being able to compete with them. So how are you able to compete with them? haha, didn't really go into that in the video.
Thanks

Well we don't grow buttons! Our strength, like most small growers, is freshness and quality. That's how we compete. Plus we've been able to find those restaurants that really believe in supporting small, family farms.

Nice segment, great coverage! Its really wonderful that you've made this work, with 2 kids too! We just had our first baby this year; really enjoyable but it changes the game quite a bit.
I don't grow on straw anymore, but I was wondering if you still use hot h20 for your straw or if u use the lime bath instead? Also you posted links to your boxes, but in the video I saw a box that said shiitake on it; where are those from? One last question (don't feel obligated to answer any of them of you don't want to ) what size is your oyster FC?

Thanks, Aleon, and congrats on your baby. They are the ultimate game changer, and will quickly highlight what is and is not essential in life. It hasn't been an easy road by any account, but we've been working our asses off, and it's finally starting to pay off.
I'm happy to answer any questions about our set up and how we've been able to make it work. We also don't pretend to have all the answers, or be experts at anything. We're constantly learning how to be better growers and business owners.
I'm still using a propane burner for the straw. I haven't been able to find large bags of the correct type of lime yet. Once I can find some locally (I know it must exist) we'll do some runs and see how it compares.
I forgot that those shiitake boxes were also in the shot. They come from Iron Linx, and are the standard boxes that most distros around here use.
We have two oyster rooms that are each 11'x14'. The shiitake/lions mane/everything else room is half the size of the oyster rooms. Also currently working on building three new rooms in our barn which will each be 11'x35'. I'll definitely be posting some info on all that as it progresses.

Thanks for the reply woodland, and if your here I wouldn't mind chatting some more Are your fc's in your house now, or somewhere else? How are you going to go about building your new larger grow rooms, with respect to insulation, HVAC systems, and humidifiers? I would like to add a 20x40' FC this year, but it would have to be outside, as I have no barn to put it in. The main things I need to research is what is the best type of sturcture (metal building, greenhouse frame, etc) what kind and how much insulation, and HVAC (heating in winter, cooling in summer). If you can or would like to shed any light on how you will aproach building your future fc's in regard to these aspects that would be most appreciated. Also Do you have a walk-in-cooler? And what type of delivery vehicle do you use? Thanks again, your successes are inspiring
