saw a mostly eaten wild piglet on my run today with a big wet paw print next to eat. do any of you shroomers live near big cats and is it worth it to find a new place to run at? i think the last instance of a panther attack in fl was 95, so i dont think im in too much danger..

My sister used to live with a young child in the deep deep boonies of Idaho and would not walk without a handgun of significance because of the cats and bears.

dawn and dusk are their most active hours for hunting, so if you are especially worried avoid running at those times.
to be honest though, the big cats of north america don't especially scare me--they are incredible shy and it's not normal for them to see a fully grown human as a food source
i would be more concerned if you had small children or pets
source: i've spent a lot of time camping on the north end of vancouver island--this area features an especially dense cougar population and is where the highest proportion of cougar attacks have occurred--i ain't ate yet!

If you're a very little person who likes to run in the dark then I would be worried. Also, large cats have quite the range. Even if you find a new route to run you are likely still in the animal's territory.

I wouldn't worry about it personally. They don't attack often at all. Plus they have a huge range like someone said earlier. They make huge loops though that can take them two weeks to complete. So he probably only passes through that area every week or two. I'd be more worried about some crazy neighbors pittbull attacking you honestly.

A couple years ago there was a cougar that got hit by a car in Connecticut. They did a DNA test and discovered it was the same animal that had been seen a few months earlier in Wisconsin.

I prefer that big cats stay hidden, humans are more danger to them than they are to us.... Almost all big cats are in decline.
if you're running by yourself though, a cougar could easily stalk you for a long time before making a move.

The danger of cats and bears in the continental United States is vastly overstated. It's a classic example of the Availability Bias (see Wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Availability_heuristic, read the paragraph under the heading Media for an explanation that hits right at this topic). Because its violent, scary, and gets a lot of media attention, people way over-estimate the chances of occurrence.
I grew up in the mountains and have spent more than my fair share of time in the outdoors backpacking, hiking, hunting, and skiing. After 30 years, I FINALLY saw my first mountain lion, and it happened to be walking through my backyard, of all places.
Yes, it does happen. There was an instance of a woman being killed by a cat a number of years ago in Newport Beach, of all places. Changing your running route though? I wouldn't bother. The only large predator I honestly consider a credible threat are grizzly bears (i.e. NOT black bears) but they basically don't range in the lower 48 with the exception of small parts of Wyoming and Montana, I believe, and even then our judgements of grizzly bear risk are subject to availability bias, just like everything else.
The idea of walking with a gun in Idaho because of cat and bear risk is patently ridiculous, by the way.

We had a black bear walk though our backyard a few years ago, and I'm about 10 miles from downtown Washington, DC.

I'm in southern Ontario. I've had bears, mountain lions, coyotes, wolves, fishers, and all sorts of creatures right on my porch. I've been very close, not intentionally, to all of these creatures and I can say they really just want to be left alone. The fishers are the worst though. They're fucking vicious, and get pretty big. I'd rather tangle with a bear, honestly.
Once I woke up to the sound of my dog barking. And barking. And barking. She wouldn't shut the fuck up and she was right out side my door, literally. I guess my dad gets up after a while to check and he hears a crash. He quickly turns on the outside light to see a black bear taking off. I guess he wanted my dog's food that was left in the cold room. The fucker broke a big chunk of glass out of the door, and cut himself doing it. You will never look at a bear the same after he tries to break in to your house.

Indeed...unless you're a dwarf who runs around dawn/dusk, it's a non-issue. We have black bears seasonally where I live, cougars year-round. I've never seen a cougar, despite frequently walking alone in the dark in desolate areas, often carrying food (I walk to work and live in a rural area).
I've seen bears a few times. They like to eat my garbage. They ignore me unless I throw things at them and shout. If I do that enough, they slowly meander away.
No big deal if you're a normal-sized adult human.

Hey OP it's probably already been said a bunch in this thread (Idk I just skimmed) but mountain lion/cougar attacks are exceedingly rare. Like super rare. I believe just about damn near every documented case, the aggressive cougar was found to be in poor health, so just hope that cougar is healthy and eating well. Then you should be good. But I think your odds of getting stalked and attacked by a cougar are about the same as getting struck by lightening.
