The biggest ones, now flowering adults, are about 5 years old. But as you say, ferrel, they are pretty slow growing.

Ive had them in rock a few days now. I want to water them but dont want to be to quick to do so. What are your thoughts on this fly? How often you water after potting them up? It seems i get scared when i have prized specimens on my hands.

This one here is roughly 16 to 18 years old.
I got it at 12 years old. I dont know how many years ive had it now. It was two 12 year olds and two 12 year old fissuratus. The vendor grew them from seed and i got them at a steal for like 56 US dollars.

Success again!
Epithelantha bokeii

Does anyone know if these are self seeding? This guy teased me all last year with the middle fluff and nothing. I absolutely love this one.

Epithelantha micromeris is indeed self-fertile, but I don't know about the other species. That's a wonderful plant you have there, Ferrel.

Well here is a little experiment of mine. Ive been trying to get these plants anchored in.

One seems to be liking it. There is a bunch of crevices and i just push in thw plants roots and fill with some loose rock.
What do you all think?

When they do anchor in,that will be a sweet little arrangement

Did that one flower while it was in the rock or was it flowering when you moved it? I transplanted my moon cactus and the big bud died I tried to be extremely careful, essentially just took it out of the pot and put it into the new one, now root disturbance at all as it was extremely root bound
That is a super cool arrangement, does it weigh a lot?

I believed it was already flowering. I saw some spent flowers but no buds and when i took away the soil i tried my damndest not to disturb the roots too much. But that was days ago. I need to water it though.

Sweet, Ferrel. I would guess the one which will do best in that arrangement in the long run is the Obregonia, the others I feel are much too vigorous to do well in such limited-resources quarters.
I've been toying with the idea of doing a similar thing myself, but I will try sowing the plants directly in the rock and let them have their roots work their way into the rock. Maybe this year...

I also thought this too but im gonna give it a go anyways. I tried to add a mix of rock to thw crevices but i did not crush it sufficiently. I threw it together in a matter of minutes.
We,ll see how it works out and ill make the proper adjustments.

Well here is my first foray into the world of the stone eaters.

Not one bit of organic matter in that pot. Sand, gravel and rocks, all taken from "habitat" (naturally occuring in a guy's backyard) cut with dolomite lime chippings just because I didn't have enough to fill the pot otherwise. Got some root out with them when I dug 'em up so I have high hopes!
No idea what the species is, would be grateful if someone is able to ID!

Could be some tephrocactus. It might not be but I'm pretty sure it's an opuntioid.

Yep, it's an Opuntia. O. fragilis, O. armata, something like that. Keep us posted on its progress.

Will do! Thanks for the potential ID, if it's a possibility then I'd guess O. fragilis as I'm told it is the only cactus native to the area.

ferrel_human said: I say for now let them stay there but be infrequent with the waterings. Top drwss with some citrus fertilizer. You should be fine with that soil as long as yoi control thw watering. I have little to no control of my waterings. Its been raining here alot. So with my old soil i know i would have problems. Now this is the test i been waiting for. Its gonna be continuous days of rain so lets see how this soil of minw holds up
So i commented on shapeshifter515's thread on youn peyote questions. So my soil in the past had failed. Each and every soil mix had failed. So they say there are as many soil mixes as there are growers and its true. I must have gone throigh a dozen mixes to get where im at. So now it happens.

So ive had 3 days of rained on plants. All in rock of course. And now we are expecting more. No control. I want my babies to hold up but realistically speaking will it happen? How will my soil hold up? Very porous so it holds vwry little water but continuous. Maybe im freaking out now.
So lets see how they do. Its early morning and tomorrow ill report back.

Too many to bring in and too heavy.

As you can see the willies have taken up a considerable amount of water but no rot or splitting. So thats 4 waterings in total in thw last 2 weeks. Lets see how the continue to do in the coming weeks.
