If it managed to get the appropriate mycorrhiza, it's probably eating its way through that rock. Amazing job, Ferrel.

I hope so. It doesn't look too shabby.

I'd like to try making a mineral soil for my lophs, and the materials I have immediately available are:
Augen Gneiss (a coarse-grained granitic variety comprised of feldspar, biotite, quartz, and magnetite) Perlite Crushed terracotta Limestone Washed coarse sand
I was wondering if the granitic gneiss would be a suitable substitute for granite and if so, which of these ingredients and in what proportions would be the most effective mineral soil to use in plastic pots?

Welcome flamingbabies. Lets do equal parts. But leave out the sand. Opt for sandstone if you can get some. Thats what i use. I dont use perlite unless its for soil applications. Not rock. But its rock none the less. Good for retaining water in its pores. And granitic gneiss? I dont know what that is. But im sure the granite i have has all sorts of minerals in it. Its all worked out very well for me.
Dont over think it is all i can say. And if youre not too sure about anything try a couple of cacti first and see how they respond.
Goodluck man. This is only the beginning.

Thanks for the welcome and speedy reply! Gneiss is a metamorphic rock that has been exposed to higher temperatures and pressures than a schist. Being granitic in this case, the parent rock would have been granite. It's actually kind of interesting, the augen gneiss I have is actually much like a sandstone in texture...large, course grains that aren't terribly stronly adhered to each other; I've discovered that it seems to retain a certain amount of water...it stays wet much longer than the fine-grained limestone in my area. Food for thought.
I'm going to use your recipe as a starting point and experiment from there...I have 9 small lophs to transplant!

I basically use any stuff my buddy gives me and the rock i collected while working out in the oilfield. Mainly sandstone and limestone. Big noce show pieces but if i have to break them to bits so be it. I actually want to try growing on the big rocks themselves. Dont know how to go about this though seeing as how i cant throw the whole thing in a ziploc bag. Cause that would be what we call kooky talk.

You could build a tent over it and keep it misted. That wouldn't be to crazy IMO.
Shit!! nature does it alone with no help

Maybe you just need to find a rock with a crack just large enough to stuff a bit of leaf mold into and germinate a seed right in the crack. Maybe use a drip line to keep it irrigated. I imagine it should stay humid enough in the crack with a few drips in the morning to simulate dew? Sounds like a cheap experiment, anyway.

Its an experiment. Soneone said grow them in rock. Then drill a small hole and fill it with powdered rock and transplant.

Try both, but I have a feeling a rock with fractures and cracks may be both more true to nature and able to provide a better substrate for growth...if the rock even has microfractures in it at the point of planting, it's going to be much easier for the cactus to send roots into the rock.
Also perhaps worth mentioning, I stumbled across a chapter on gravel culture in a text on hydroponic food production I have. Granite is also the recommended medium for that. It seems that this mineral soil we're making is essentially a gravel culture.

This is the rock in question. Im almost certain its limestone. I did the apple cider test and it fizzed like it had rabies.

Closer look at the crevices.

And this limestone may get sacrficed. I can always get a 5 gallon bucket of gravel size limestone for 5 bucks i am still debating this.

That looks identical the limestone that is prevalent in my area; in my case, it's dolomitic limestone from the Oxford formation, laid down in the lower Ordovician. Looks like a fair bit of quartz in there, too. Definitely worth giving it a try! The first chunk I find aesthetically pleasing, would look great with some cactus growing in it.

Hahaha what a legend. I got to browsing the thread a little more and saw that animal and bird droppings were a potential source of nitrogen, so I picked up some bat guano that I think I will make a mild tea from and feed my cactus once a year. Have you got any recent pictures of your cactus collection?

Spent half of yesterday crushing marble granite, local tannish granite, limestone, and other random rocks from the railroad tracks by right by the lake I was fishing on. Damn crappie aren't biting yet But I'm not sure what plants I have, I would want to put rock this year. Probably a loph or two.

From what I've seen you'll have a lot less risk of rot from over watering because it's really not possible using rocks, but your plants will grow way slower and the pots will be heavier to move around if need be.
So just factor in which is more important and go for it
