maybe just filling the pot with just leca balls and perlite (semihydroponics as some people call it) solid slow releasing ferts over it, ime zeolite dries out very fast, much faster than any other thing, it is also a fungicide, i mix my soils heavier as it goes up

I thought one had to add ferts in the water if growing in a purely mineral mix.
But maybe they can grow without it, like the lophs.
My guess would be they will grow very slow in rocks compared with fertilized soil though.

Can´t you just put a lid on the pot with a hole for the cacti column if rain are frequent?
You have then to water them manually of cause.

Stone soil PH? [Re: Pandemoon]
    #25244124 - 06/02/18 09:16 AM (5 years, 7 months ago)

So I’ve got several Ariocarpus plants on the way all the way from Italy. They should be here in a week or so. I plan to put them in, pretty much, a completely mineral potting mix that I’m working on now. Is there any way to check the ph of an all mineral mixture? I’m still trying to get it all dialed in and I’d like to ensure the PH is at least ballpark right. I’ve heard of Ariocarpus growing in both acidic and alkaline soils and I know they are typically found in alkaline soils in nature. Based on what I read of the Stone Eaters pdf. (especially the 5th law) I’d like to keep a more alkaline soil for them. I don’t want it to get to high though so I’d like to be able to test it somehow. Any ideas?
