Headed out to Chinati mountains and big bend ranch. I'll be sure to take some pictures and post up when I return. I'll probably get some more ariocarpus fissuratus from a buddy who gets them off his ranch.

Some pictures from west Texas. Have not gone through all of them yet. Photographed a lot of Ariocarpus found a large dense population. Most appeared healthy and a few were dead usually ones with root exposed due to erosion.

Next time I'm out west I'm going to ask if I can buy a cutting of that saguaro cacti. The baby one I have is growing fine despite the high humidity and wet weather. I'd love to get a fat log of it.  It takes awhile growing them from seed

I'm hoping to head back in June and look at some different property for sale in the region. Those cactus are everywhere out there

In June you're likely to find the Ariocarpus bearing fruits. If your friend won't mind, try collecting some seed.

I'm sure they won't mind.  A friend in the area collects ariocarpus off his buddies ranch and has mailed me a ton of wild ariocarpus seed and plants. I have about 30 wild ones now. I'm hoping he finds a crested, montrose, or variegated one. Would be an excellent specimen for breeding. The plan is to grow out all the seeds and start planting back in the wild on the property I buy..where the rocks are alive..literally.

I saw a bunch of Mormon tea bushes while hiking. Im going to ask him for some seed and clones.

Hi guys,

I did not read the whole thread.. but has anyone tried growing Trichocereus cacti with only stones in the pot?

In my region it's a very wet climate, the rainy days overpower the dry, even in summer. We have about 1300mm of rain on average.
As I have lost several cacti due to too wet soil I though about using way more stones, to keep good airflow and to help it drying faster..

Now I wonder if Trichos need much earth in the soil or not. Is it possible to grow Trichos with stones only? Will they root in stones?

Greetz, P

They'll root just fine in a 100% mineral mix. A fair number of growers root in mineral mix exclusively.

I haven't done side by side comparisons, but they'll also grow in a 100% mineral mix, but for optimal growth you'll need to supplement feeds.

I feel that enough perlite in the mix helps the drainage. Never tried adding stones to my trich mix but most trichs are mountain cacti. Im sure there are enough rock that mix. If ypi catch my drift.
