I do. I still use a systemic fungicide solution for the first watering. It's not necessary as others have said before but that's the way always the way I've done it since I began growing from seed. Throw on top of rock mix and wait for seedlings to emerge.

I feel a combination of rock size gives the best anchor for seedling support. The more crevices the better. Simulates wild conditions where seeds fall as they may.

I was scared because I sowed seed and a majority fell through gaps in between rocks and such,

Let's hope they emerge!!

I like my mix to have some crushed rock. Not like powder but granulated. It fills in the gaps
If this is the case them those seeds will emerge. If it's just big sizes then it's possible they fell further. I think 2.5 centimeters or less is ok. Like am inch or below.

Echinocereus triglochidiatus? I think it is in the soil, but they all seem to be near/under basalt boulders. Not sure if because of favorable micro-climate, or because of bacteria eating the rock, or maybe both?

Active?

To my understanding it's bretty obvious these plants roots are capable to actually use minerals in rock to grow. In nature, there's always composing material because of winter and summer season in this boulder going around sun. In long term, I've seen much effects of rocks or random chips in the pot. Some roots can realy stay attached to keep decent size rock "boulders" attached to plant by roots. Potted plants I mean.

I've read some species may grow only at vertical surfaces etc, very different habitats or so. also pictures from very rocky places with certain cacti species growing almost at pure rock. :awesome:

Hey Ferrel I'm planning to grow some good rock lovers and I was wandering if you could possibly put together some kind of tek labeling the best types of rock to use as well as how you prepare, crush and filling the gaps kinda like you did with your how to root a trich cutting "or was it the how to prepare proper cactus soil I remember you ruined a bucket with 3 coir bricks:lol:".

Also how about broken and crushed terra cotta pots?

I know all the answers are in here somewhere but it's kinda difficult to read through all the pages.

Clay pots, granite, granite-schist, limestone, sandstone. As for filling in the gaps, if you've sifted your material, all the small granulated stuff at the bottom works great as a filler. Or do like me. Once you got it all mixed up, grab a little gardening shovel and constantly mix as ypu fill your pots. That should take care of the big gaps.

Hadn't thought about it, but I could.

Any tricks? Or do I just walk out there every so often until the fruit looks ready and cut one open to see?

I've never collected cactus seeds.

Newer pic. Took this right at dusk.

I have also joined the revolution last year.

Changed the soil of most of my plants to pretty much 100% mineral mixes.

I always try to grow my plants hard, which means i don't treat them that well, that way they will remain compact and hopefully resemble their natural appearance in the wild.

Still i am a bit of a softy, so in all of my mixed I've added Akadama, which will hopefully release micro nutrients in the mix over time, allowing (i hope) for a more smooth transition of the plants to the new mixes.

Here are the buggers:

A. myriostigma tricustatum aka "Scarface"

I believe this one is some sort of Parodia...

A. fissuratus

S. rauschii. The main body is stretched, unfortunately i already got it that way, but it is still wonderful!

This isn't a cacti, but i love these little buggers! They have joined the revolution as well!

Beautiful rauschii!
Those offsets will soon put on a bit of height, and the main stem might contract a bit, leaving a lovely sprawling mound :awesome:

I've put some degrafts onto a rainwater and rock diet. Moler, tufa, quartz chips and crushed granite, in a clay pot. These will sit outside in full sun whenever possible, all depends on the English weather, I'll move them into the greenhouse when we get rain for days in a row.

Half of them have started to root. They were degrafted last November and have just sat around in a tub on whatever windowsill they got moved to, they were overdue being potted up.

The large pot isnt finished. I have one button absent, it has gone on a small journey for a project, when it returns it will fill the gap and I'll top dress some more.

They were all grown on pereskiopsis under CFL for 1 year.

They look fantastic MH. You will not be dissapointed with the results.

People are apprehensive, at first, putting there cacti in a substrate that is quite unorthodox. It was my concern at first but I have seen nothing but good coming from a total rock diet.

Thank you Mostly_Harmless for joining the rock revolution. :super:
