everyone has different skills OP. I know how to do a lot of shit, and am completely ambivalent about learning how to do other things.
like plumbing. i have no desire whatsoever to learn about it. my skills stop at using a plunger.

It could mean you are lazy, lazy to find out how stuff works and then go out and fix it.
I had a problem with water buildup in the bottom of my fridge, so I was like "ehhh should I buy a new one?" I googled Water In My Fridge Fix It, then I got this video:
And it turned out it was a 3 minute fix.
Was I retarded? No I was lazy, too lazy to look for answers.

My mom is that way, but she's exceptionally good at her job as a psychotherapist, and surprisingly had a high paying career for just a master's degree... so she can throw all the money at all the shit she doesn't care to understand...
And I grew up that way too to a lesser extent. I'm a city boy, if I want a pie, I fuckin' go to the bakery and buy a pie...... That's just how it is I do have a handful of talents though, in bed for example

normal door knobs are extremely simple. If it was a cassete knob those are a bit tricky and you're off the hook
What's a cassette knob. I've installed thousands of door knobs and never heard the term.

I'm primarily a carpentry contractor. I've been a carpenter for 35 years. It is my main trade even when I just do construction management. Of course I've installed a ton of doorknobs.

Another name you might be familiar with is mortise lock.
we call often call them cassettes though.

I kinda thought that was what you meant but when I googled cassette knobs I got a bunch of hits about cassette tapes. They are a complete pain in the ass unless you have an expensive jig

This thread reminds me, I gotta start learning how basic stuff work.
I'm not a mechanically inclined guy. I know how to fix a doorknob though. I don't really know anything about cars. I know the main components of it and what they do (I think). But don't ask me how these components work.
I've looked at a transmission before and holy fuck does it seem complicated.
Maybe one of you guys can answer this one:
I've always wondered about this; when I'm on drive with the brakes on at a red light, where does the energy coming from the motor go to? I always wondered how car motor don't choke out when I'm holding the breaks on drive. Stupid right?

An automatic transmission disengages the same as when you depress the clutch in a manual transmission when you apply the brakes. Energy is still being expended, however, as long as the engine is running at all. Holding the brake and leaving the clutch engaged will stall the engine in a manual transmission.
Forget about working on recent model cars. 40 years ago you could make a temp fix with a paper clip or matchbook cover. You could change your water pump with common tools and barked knuckles. Look under the hood now. There isn't hardly a square inch not taken up by something.

I disagree i can pretty much almost any thing mechanical that is common
If i can take it apart i can find the problem and put it back together and working sometimes better than others though 9/10 times
