Physical Senstations of Magic Mushrooms
    #19281395 - 12/15/13 09:28 PM (10 years, 1 month ago)

Before anyone blows up about this, I am aware this question has been posed numerous times in numerous places; however, not once have I read a single response that provides adequate answers--and I've been cycling through these posts for 6+ months now.

I want to try to get a fair summation of the physical sensations of taking mushrooms. Each time the question has been raised over this topic responders usually tangent off and describe their emotional "feelings" or thoughts during the experience, or give very vague answers. For first-time users, the lack of answers to this question turns away more potential psychonauts than any other inquiry. My goal is to finally quell that dilemma.

For those blessed with a colorful vocabulary and a talent for description: your input is wanted! Please do NOT post trip reports or respond with off-topic, improper, or vague answers. Instead, describe in the best way possible what you felt in the physical realm of your body (arms, legs, torso, etc.) throughout the trip from the onset to the after effects if possible. Use commonly understood physical sensation descriptors such as: nausea, tingling, butterflies, pressure, etc. and avoid vague or indescribable terms like weird or strange.

Thank you to everyone who shares their input. By answering this properly maybe we can help give newcomers that last little nudge they need before they decide to take the leap.

To kick things off, the best description of the onset and come-up of mushrooms is akin to the feeling of driving over a sharp hill in a car when your stomach suddenly drops--much like powerful butterflies in your stomach for a very short time. To some people, often depending on dosage and experience with mushrooms and other psychedelics, this feeling can be overwhelming, but it is only temporary. It shortly gives way to more balanced feelings of an overall bodily warmth, tingling feeling, and the sensation of feeling light or submerged in water that last for the majority of the trip.

To many people, after the come-up--when the body high balances out and the mind high kicks in--the physical sensations are often forgotten or overlooked in lieu of the mind-altering effects.

Exactly. Being a long time pot smoker, I akin the early feelings to the comeup of a brownie high. My stomach kind of has a moving sensation to it, but not nauseous. After that I get that slow head turning and a body high that plants me in the couch. Then once you get up to where thing are more psychedelic, you get that energy back.

Physically...
Depends on dose, set and setting, you, etc

Lightness or heaviness... Hot or cold...

Senses get mixed up...... Most of the time... It's mental

...

Just depends

I felt very uncomfortable on the comeup of 2.5g lemon tekked of cyans, it was my only trip so I can't relate it to anything else.

The feelings didnt go away for a good hour +

Very weird body high, felt as if it was in different places every few minutes, was wobbling around and falling over on my counter for awhile.

Felt very cold, very hot, normal, nausea, mind fuck. All altering every 3-4 min made it very uncomfortable.. One moment I'm falling over, the next I feel ill.

Bunch of mixed feelings it felt like it was taking forever to set into the trip.

It varies by person and by experience, but here's some general description:

(NOTE: This is specific to mushrooms! Different psychedelics have very different body feelings especially compared to mushrooms)

At the very beginning, there is a feeling of anxiety, nervous apprehension, sometimes regret, anticipation, just a general feeling of being on edge. There is a kind of sharp, unusually cold mental clarity. Nausea too, normally. Over time, the body starts to feel a little heavier, slightly wobbly, and smaller or shorter, touch starts to feel a little strange. Small feelings seem slightly magnified in odd ways.

Then there is a body sensation I can't describe exactly. A kind of heaviness or liquid like feeling on the inside. Maybe like a doughy kind of feeling, combined with a strange feeling. There is also an odd sensation like gentle static or an itch that doesn't itch. A kind of smoothed scratchiness, I don't know how to explain it, and I'm not doing it justice. Over time, some dry surfaces start to feel wet. Your own dry clothes might feel wet, or the carpet, or generally anything.

There is a discoordination not unlike a small amount of alcohol, but a little different. In fact, if you're completely new to it, the come up is not unlike alcohol, except there is increasing anxiety rather than calm, and your mental processes seem sharper and more manic compared to alcohol. Movements you intend to be small end up large, and movements you intend to be large end up small.

Oh, and you get colder. It depends on a lot of things, room temperature, clothing, but generally always you get colder.

As things progress, body proportions seem to expand and relax, but then again everything seems to expand and relax, bend and wave, breathe, and so on, so it's not unusual. The doughy liquid body feeling becomes more pronounced. Sometimes there is a feeling when you breathe in like everything is expanding and there is a great anticipation or momentary building of emotion. Hard to explain.

Sometimes, for some people their voice noticeably changes, or they can't pronounce things in the same way they usually would. In extreme cases, sentences become really crazy in their pitch and stresses, going up and down like a rollercoaster on a random track.

On large doses, close to the peak or during the peak many people feel like they may pass out, or like they're light headed, or can't breathe. This sometimes causes new people to think they're dying. It's a really disturbing feeling if you're new to it. There is just a feeling as if you're faint and might pass out at any moment, but the faintness is really disturbing, as if your whole body is weak and on the edge of non-existence. Like you're only a razor's edge away from being asleep. Some people do actually pass out, so the feeling might not be too far off.

Coming down, there is a feeling like your body is coming back together, and things are starting to feel more normal again.

I didn't particularly enjoy sweating profusely out of my palms and armpits as well. Might as well throw in my neck and legs got shot up with novacaine, completely numb.

On a common dose...

- some stomach discomfort (mainly a heavy feeling in the gut, which comes on strong when the peak kicks in)

- Hot / cold spells (sweating, shivers) which can make me feel a bit agitated (taking clothes off, then putting them back on again)

- Weakness in the joints (operating devices, general co-ordination and speech becomes difficult).

I've learned that with mainly all psychedelics, these are common symptoms. The feeling reminds me of when I'm ill and i have a bit of a high temperature...but in a good way (if that makes sense).

(gonna be talking about the ideal dose, ideal set and setting experience. Note that this is how I experience it. In no way should the contents of the following text be considered an etalon of what to expect for noob trippers.)

What comes to mind first is that it felt as if the load of having a body was lifted. What do I mean by that? Well, all the mildly unpleasant, but completely usual sensations you experience throughout your daily existence, the slight various pressures around one's head, the tenseness of the muscles (in my own case; particularly the neck since I have a reoccurring twitching habit), itches and the general waves of fatigue; everything had been... lifted

:feelsgoodman:

It was as if I was filled with helium, a sensation as if my entire body was floating without direction and effortlessly in a space of pureness. Every motion that I saw or partook in myself, glaaaaaaazed trough that ineffable space, which I start to experience as an extension of my own body over time. Even if I start doing something random, there's always a distinct feeling that I know exactly what to do next; how to twist that wrist, in what order to extend my fingers- it's like hitting a perfect note and just zoning out to watch the combo stack up effortlessly.

There's a distinct feeling of being expanding, far reaching, both inwards and outwards but without feeling like you're taking up all the space, so there's also a sense of openness and simplicity. I often catch myself feeling as if every posture I strike looks like a renaissance painting, facial expressions too (like my current avatar ). That is because there's simply a prodigious amount of sensuality involved, even in the way you move your tongue to pronounce your thoughts. Everything just flows out of you and you feel as if you synchronise perfectly with the environment. With the exception of it actually being scorching hot or incredibly cold, all temperature experience seems to become juuuust right.

All tactile experiences feel richer, my skin contemplates better than I ever thought possible; you can melt into your surroundings, experience what it means to be a body among these things. The "cosiness rush" you all know and love from your childhood becomes more than an experience; it becomes a perspective. Honestly, there's a whole book to be written on how tactile experiences change under the influence of mushrooms and how sophisticatedly it does so. The changes can be mind-blowing and so spot on with one's most inner person. And the miracle of it all is that it all just feels so incredibly natural. Some part of you know this relates to you deeply on a very personal and intimate level

Great job so far, everyone! These are some very precise descriptions of common feelings to expect when taking mushrooms. Keep in mind that what you feel may be very similar or very different from someone else, and while one person may experience the majority of these listed sensations you personally may feel only a select few, or potentially far more.

I did notice, at first glace, most of these descriptions read as fairly negative to someone who is unfamiliar with psychedelics, but that is not necessarily the case. While feelings such as nausea are generally negative, most of the other sensations listed here are not innately negative or uncomfortable, regardless of how you may respond to them on an average day. Remember that while these effects are taking place your mind and thought processes are also beginning to change, and many of these sensations can actually--and often do--feel incredibly pleasant. This is why set and setting are absolutely vital!

Please make sure that before you partake in these incredible substances, that you are perfectly certain it is what you want to do, and that you are in a safe and comfortable environment. As long as you do these things even the most negative of feelings may instead feel unbelievably positive to you while under the influence of psychedelics.

My single best piece of advice: if you EVER start to feel like things are taking a turn for the worst just force yourself to LAUGH. Trust me.

My physical feelings included:

- Feeling of warmth throughout my body (mainly around legs, arms, groin area). Almost like the feeling as if you pissed yourself, but not wet.

- Some shivers here and there

- Sweating a lot when experiencing anxiety

- Stomach cramp due to eating mushrooms on a sandwich

- Feeling as if I'm melting into the bed... becoming one with it. This was an amazing feeling. At one point I asked myself if I even had legs. But I wasn't afraid... it felt normal!

- Melting into other people I touch

Feeling like your submerged in water and made of dough seem the best descriptions ITT, atleast for me anyways. Then of course there are the completely ridiculous ones like your body coming apart like in a time warp(i actually had to ask someone if my body was coming apart, when they said no it was the biggest releif ive ever felt lol) or your head arms and legs held on by magnets. Ive felt like my body was folding inwards sometime as well, kind of like in a movie when someone disapears and they bend and fold into themselves.

Yea, anythings possible lol

:orly:

Physical sensations?  It can be any of a whole lot of things.  The best way to find out is just to try them and see.  They won't hurt you - unless of course you need hurting, in which case it's straight to hell...

The main effect is physical euphoria, like you're mainlining some sort of powerful mood and body enhancer.  Which you are.

But during the comeup it all feels "weird and strange" often with alternating chills and hot flashes, occasional loss of consciousness through passing out (that could hurt), a general sense of unease and foreboding swiftly (often suddenly) replaced with the euphoria delivered by the fruit of the gods.

I don't believe in nudging newcomers over the edge of this particular precipice.  Everybody should take it at their own speed.  Anybody who's turned away by descriptions like this isn't ready anyway.

Just take them and see.  Common unpleasant physical side-effects are stomach discomfort, smelly farts, excessive yawning, strange feeling teeth etc.

I take the mushrooms:
Tastes nasty and this causes stomach discomfort. Just the fact that I know I took a psychedelic causes an immediate change in my thought patterns.

Come up:
My body feels heavy. It feels as if some unknown force is pushing me down, I feel like I'm sinking into the chair. I feel restless. My legs won't stop moving, I can't get comfortable. I feel anxiety building along with my growing restless energy.

Trip:
On a moderate dose, my body doesn't feel any different from normal, but I'm no longer feeling my body in its human form. I usually become a puddle. I don't see my body in the form of a puddle. I don't think that my body has taken the form of a puddle. I FEEL like my body has melted into the couch or onto the floor.

Sensations vary as the trip progresses. Sometimes my puddle body feels like it's made of colorful flashing lights. FEELS. My body feels like it is a puddle of flashing light. That's why talking about this subject is so difficult for people who have not tripped. How does a puddle feel a color? Fuck if I know, but you asked what I felt.

On a high dose, there is no body to feel.

Comedown:
Just a slow decrease in effects till baseline.
