Finally!

So I finally get to try something I've been wanting to do for years. Glassblowing. It's always appealed to me, something about it hits me to my core. I'm really looking forward to it. Even if I'm horrible at it I'll still be happy. I'm so grateful to finally have the opportunity to give it a shot. Found a guy who is close to me and said he would give me some classes. He seems really cool, extremely outgoing and very positive.
I've been reading what I can comprehend on talkglass and watching some youtube videos here and there. It's kind of hard to understand what is going on in the videos but I'm starting to grasp it. Any glassblowers here in the pub? If so what kind of advice can you give to an absolute noob to the torch? Besides burning myself of course.
Thanks.

If and when I get good enough to make wicked pipes I'll definitely remember you and hook you up. It looks like such a hard craft to learn, hopefully I catch on. Oh and that chick in your sig is smoking hot. Something about redheads.

Thanks man. I knew it was something I had to try ever since I saw a flame off at CHAMPS in Vegas. To watch them manipulating molten glass just blew my mind.

They used to do it twice a year in Vegas but last I heard they moved it to Colorado. I used to love going, wasn't open to the public but a few growers I knew would always had passes for my wife and I. Place was such a smoke fest. The last day a lot of the vendors would do cash and carry deals, got a lot of sweet glass and nice dyes for basically half off.

Actually just looked on the CHAMPS page and there is a show in vegas January 21-23. Wish I was still lived out there. Well actually not, but I would love to attend the show.

From what I hear you need around 2-3k to setup your own space. You can buy a basic torch and tool kit for 700 or so. Then you need proper ventilation, the rental of the tanks, glass to work with and of course a good space to do it in. Probably much more to it than that but like I said I'm a complete noob to this.

If there is a smoke shop you frequent ask them to help you out. Tell them you are getting into glassblowing and want to meet some people. They might not want to because you can get some killer deals there and don't want to lose the business. It's worth a shot though.

Well, I'm heading out tomorrow to take my first class. I'm so fucking pumped. The guy makes some beautiful pieces so I'm honored to have him as a teacher. I'll try to keep you guys posted on my progress. I'm sure it's going to be pretty janky in the beginning but I have to start somewhere.

So my first class went pretty well. Had an hour lesson followed by 2 hours of torch time. It was seriously one of the funnest things I've ever done. Just worked on basic stuff, made a few little marbles. Definitely something I'll be continuing, most likely going to take a lesson and get some torch time at least once a week or two. If anybody was ever curious or wanted to give it a shot I say go for it. More challenging than I expected but I love stuff like that.
