How overrated is high school and college?
    #19280165 - 12/15/13 04:43 PM (10 years, 2 months ago)

How overrated is high school and college? I remember all the horror stories my parents told me when I was a teenager about how terrible my life would be if I didn't get a college education. I kinda just fucked around throughout high school. Wasn't a bad student, but not great either, like b's and c's mostly. I decided I was sick of school so decided not to go to college. It was a bit tough for about the first two years on my on, but now I'm the full time coeditor of a magazine the is pretty popular in this area and make $42K a year. Do you guys think it's all overrated too?

Depends entirely on what you want to do in life.

Sometimes I feel like college is a waste. None of my family members went to college, and they aren't "rich" but they are living pretty well. I'm I college and I feel like I'm wasting money. My step-dad starting working when he was in high school and I guess he worked his way up & did a lot of saving on the way because he has a huge house with like four cars. I want to be like that. I don't want to go to school taking classes that have nothing to do with my major.... I just want to start working.

In the USA I think high school is not overrated at all.
College, however, might be, if you don't have a dream of being anything besides a manager of a retail store or a carpet cleaner.

Going to college (and later graduate school) was the single best decision I've ever made in my life.  It's set me up financially and professionally for the rest of my life.  I couldn't imagine not going and missing out on the experiences both provide.

i'm in college so its a little premature, but i can't imagine how i would be without college. i've just been introduced to so much new and cool shit, even if i don't get a job out of college it would have been worth it for the experiemce

I think after like...9th grade you should be able to go into a trade school (unless you wanted to do high school /college sports) because I just feel high school doesn't prepare you for the real world. Sure they give you the basics and its especially useful if you want to go to college but, I went to a trade school and was making $40k a year at 18

College worked for me. It opened up many opportunities. I hate shit jobs, so I worked my ass off in school. Prior to grad school it might be a good idea to gain some real life experiences. You really need all: life experience, education, and financial intelligence.

If you don't go to school, at least develop your financial skills. You don't need an college education to make money or start a business.

College isn't overrated at all. College is whatever you put into it.

If you go for a underwater basket weaving degree... don't expect to be anything other than a McDonalds manager.

If you go for an actual degree like engineering, medical, IT, Computer Science, CIS, etc it's 100% worth it and you'll find yourself ahead in the long run because the job market is great for these kind of careers.

It depends on the college, your courses, and what you put into it. I never went to college, and I made it pretty high up the ladder at my company. TBH we look at a lot of candidates when we hire(Mostly interviewing candidates for our tech support center), and tend to dismiss the 4 year college kids. A LOT of them know theory and pointless text book shit, but have zero ability to do the job out of the gate. We like to look for people who worked full time and picked up an AS, or a few relevant certs. Similar story when we hire software engineers, but we also pick up some guys here and there who went to a big name 4 year...Pitt, CMU, MIT, etc.. They tend to know their shit.

for what i want to do, college (and high school at that) was a waste of time.

however, what made college worthwhile was all the experiences.  none of them directly involved the university, or my field of study, but it was the setting

:nonono:

should say for what i'm doing.  forestry, agriculture, etc...there certainly are some good things to learn in a classroom on these subjects, and even more than can be learned in a lab.  but the field is the best place to learn most of what is needed. and there are thousands of people willing to teach for free or pay one while learning

i could have started my "career" right out of high school, and most likely already achieved the lifestyle i want, and when my body was younger and a little more resilient.  hard labor has an exponential toll as one gets older.

unless one is going for a technical or "serious" (think doctor) career, most are better off not going to university, imo.  waste of time and money.

Yeah, I agree with that. See I'm majoring in psychology, and although it is interesting & all that, unless I go to school for another 6-even 10 years & get my masters degree or Ph.D, I'm gonna pay more money for college, than I will be getting paid at work (according to my city's statistics) So, I took off...just for a semester.(I plan to go back next year) I've been working & saving my money & will either change my major to something that will make more money or just keep working for a while. Like I totally get that you will make more money with a degree, but I have plenty people in my family who have no degree and make shit ton of money.

Unless you already know what you want to do, college is pointless.  Don't waste your money on something pointless that you'll never get a job with.  Just do well in high school so when you do know what you want to do, you can apply yourself in college and not waste the experience.  I finally know what I want to do with college, but I've fucked up so bad that no college will take me because I was forced to go right out of highschool and was aimless in college.
