Hey shroomery,
I'm not inquiring about which types of psychedelic mushrooms can be found in Upstate NY. However, does anyone have any personal success finding psychoactive mushrooms in Upstate NY, namely around the Adirondacks, including the Amanitas? Share your NY shroom hunting success stories!

We only have one regular user that I know of from NY, maybe he will post in this thread if he sees it.
Until he posts, you should probably content yourself with viewing the Psilocybe and Gymnopilus observations on mushroomobserver from New York, there are many.
Here is a link to the Psilocybe observations
http://mushroomobserver.org/observer/advanced_search?q=1gYg0
That link will die in 48 hours, however you can see them by clicking Advanced Search at the top of the page, putting Psilocybe into the name field and New York into the location.

Amanitas yes, other psychedelics no. They obviously exist but I haven't found them.

You have at least two very nice herbariums in New York, which have lots of Psilocybe collections. Would be great if you could go over there and photograph them. That would give you a good idea where to look.

Which herbariums are you referring to? In the state or the city of NY?
The Adirondacks are a goldmine for mushrooms, I'm sure you can find anything if you learn the right places. I love getting up there and hunting for them. Sadly I'm usually with people who couldn't care less so I don't get much time to look.

I was referring to NYBG and NYS.
If you make it over there, perhaps you could photograph all the interesting Psilocybe collections and add them to mushroomobserver.org so they show up on the distribution map.
Here is one I just added yesterday: http://mushroomobserver.org/155661
I wonder where the P. liniformans was found in NY. That would be a good place to visit at the right time of year.

What areas of the Adirondacks do you recommend?

Leadbelly...King of the 12-string!
I've had personal (limited) success finding active Shrooms in upstate NY...Psilocybe, Gymnopilus, Panaeolus and Pluteus. It's probably easier to grow cubes than it is to find large quantities of these. If you're set on finding your own, some work and dedication may be involved.
Bluefoots can be found in the Adirondacks and across the state.

Amanita muscaria is present and should be very abundant in the Adirondacks due to all the pines.

Inky Caps edible when young no longer edible when the start to break down and you can't ingest them with alcohol or it will give you what's called coprine syndrome which is a shitty poisoning

I have not successfully found any Shrooms in the wild in Upstate NY, I once found an unidentified mushroom that was reddish in it's infancy and reddish-orange full grown with white warts much like an Amanita but instead of gills on the underside of the cap it was more like a sponge. The mushroom full grown was about 3 inches in diameter, the cap was about an inch thick in the center of the crown from top to the stem, the stem was about a half inch thick, and the total height was about 6 inches (the description is from the largest one the average was about 2/3 that). When I broke the cap in half it was very meaty and was yellow until it was bruised, it turned blue instantly much like a typical Psilocybin would. I couldn't find the species anywhere in my book guide. At the time I was with a reckless friend and he just ate one of the average ones anyway, so I baby sat him just in case. He had a little vomiting about 30 mins later nothing serious and after 6 hours of tripping off the one mushroom he came down. He described it as a similar high to the Ecuadorian Cubensis. I wish I know what it was.
As far as finding Shrooms in Upstate NY other than the common weak psilocybe found on most lawns and not worth eating you can find, depending on whether or not the farmers put an additive preventing fungal growth in their dung I have found many liberty caps (Horse dung) and what I like to call Dung loving psilocybin in Cow pies. I seem to find them in late April till early June and then again late August till the first week of October.
I hope this helps Skip
