Coprinus comatus
    #1928002 - 09/18/03 06:16 AM (13 years, 2 months ago)

I found a couple of kilograms of this species today. A friend of mine says that they?re impossible to dry, because they?ll be redused to black soup. But I?ve dried them successfully before - they looked like other dried mushrooms, not like that black soup. I dried them in the oven at about 40-50 degrees celcius. But I haven?t tried to make some meal of them after I?ve dried them though.

I know I can freeze them but my freezer is broken (anyone got a spare one?), so that is not an option.

Any suggestions or recommendations about preserving this species?

continue drying them if you can. Freezing them turns them to white goo, instead of black goo. Dry em and grind em and use them as seasoning.

They way I've always preserved 'em was to fry 'em up in butter, then divide it all up into single serving sizes in ziploc bags and freeze those.

The real trick is that you've got to cook them to stop the autodeliquescence before you try drying or freezing them (or whatever).

They're great in omlets, and Hope Miller (Dr Orson Miller's wife) makes a great cream of mushroom soup with 'em.

Happy mushrooming!

Freezing them very rapidly (perhaps after drying them) or simply freezedrying them should work.

But I was wondering, comatus seems to interact in a catastrophical way with alcohol in the body, how long does this effect hold after having eaten them? I've heard one day, also heard 1 week...

Coprinus atramentarius, the tippler's bane can cause gastric distress and other symptoms when consumed with booze, with very few reports for C. comatus. It is suggested that people that drink regularly should not the eat the tippler's bane, as to how long extactly you need to wait I am not sure, a few days at least, to be safe.

There have been some reports of poisoning in people who consumed alcohol and Shaggy Manes. It's not common. It may be a specific strain of Shaggy Mane, or perhaps an individual reaction in those people.

Another mushroom which seems to cause reactions in some people is Black Morels.

I knew a guy (he died recently) who would get sick if he ate Boletus edulis and drank any alcohol.

Happy mushrooming!

Coprinus atramentarius is poisonous in combination with alcohol. I've never heard of incidents with Coprinus comatus in combination with alcohol (But I'm not an expert though).

Went on a hunt today found a very old, very dry Coprinus, probably comatus.

My personal opinion on the poisonings with Shaggy Manes and alcohol is that they are probably cases of misidentification. Coprine (the toxin in Coprinus atramentarius) has never been found in a specimen of C. comatus.

Incidentally, here is a list of all the mushrooms known to have coprine:

Coprinus atramentarius
C. insignis
C. quadrifidus
C. variegatus

Other mushrooms which seem to cause alcohol poisoning (consistently) but which do not have coprine:

Coprinus erethistes
C. fuscescens
Clitocybe clavipes
Boletus luridus

Happy mushrooming!

Attn PWN hunters: If you should come across a bluing Psilocybe matching P. pellicolusa please smell it.
If you detect a scent reminiscent of Anethole (anise) please preserve a specimen or two for study and please PM me.

simply freezedrying?

are you aware of the cost of a freeze drying machine? =\

nothing simple about it.
