Does anyone here Canoe?
    #19140838 - 11/15/13 12:44 PM (10 years, 3 months ago)

Heya fellow outdoor enthusiast shroomerites!  I've been wondering about canoeing and camping.  I hear you can carry a ton more gear in a canoe vs a kayak, however you've got to be a little more careful in the elements.

Can anyone gives me tips on this?  I'd love to get into canoeing as it looks like something amazing to do on calm lakes, especially for camping trips.

I got a 16 foot canoe i salvaged after somebody wrecked it and left it stuck in some rapids. It was pretty easy to bend the frame back into shape and no major damage.

It can fit 3 people fairly easily and a ton of gear, pretty easy to move with a double sided oar or two people with single oars. Its not as stable as a kayak, if somebody stands up it will get real wobbly. 16 feet is huge though and it is a pain in the ass to transport anywhere. without a boat trailer i have to strap the thing onto the top of my ford explorer with a ton of rope and it takes alot of effort and is pretty sketchy to transport that way.

Canoes are the most fun type of boat on the water! Yes, you can carry a LOT more gear in a canoe than you can in a kayak (although they are fun too). I've been canoe tripping since I was 2 years old.

The single paddle makes it a lot more maneuverable in tight spots, although it takes a bit of technique to paddle straight.

The most important stroke you will need to know is the J-stroke, where the paddle turns outwards (face parallel to the gunwale) at the end of the stroke. This is how you keep it straight without having to constantly switch sides. You should use this stroke on the lee side of the boat (the side opposite the one that the wind is blowing onto).

The close second is feathering the paddle, which is used to steady a canoe that is stopped in the water. The paddle is held parallel to the surface of the water, and you just make figure 8's. If you feel the canoe going over, push down on the paddle. This takes some feel. This stroke is so effective that once you get is down, you can actually lean your whole body out over the gunwale.

Draw and pry strokes are simple, and are used for quick turns. Stick the paddle in the water with the face of the paddle parallel to the gunwale and draw towards you or pry it away from you. This is very effective if used by the person paddleing in the bow to supplement the person steering in the stern when paddling tandem.

The stronger (more experienced) paddler should ALWAYS be in the back, as he is the one who steers. The paddler in the bow sets the stroke rate.

Also, to properly control a canoe, you must kneel in the bottom of the boat. If your canoe has seats, you can use them in very calm water, but it will make the boat far more tippy. NEVER sit on the thwarts, or lean on the gunwale. You'll be in the drink before you know it.

When paddling solo, you will be positioned closer to the middle of the boat, to keep the bow in the water, and to provide more leverage when steering.

Those are the basics. I'm sure you could pick up a book, or take some lessons. It would be very helpful to be shown what to do by somebody that's experienced.

Whitewater paddling an open canoe is one of the most exhilarating experiences in the world (and this is coming from a guy who races sportbikes). Don't try it until you're pretty good, though.

I hope you try it out, canoing is such a great, cheap way to get on the water.

Keep the round side down!

I've had this one for 2 years now, it was a great investment and I love every second of it.  Can slide into tight spots that are not visited very often. Quiet and smooth, you can be surrounded by wildlife without bothering them.

15.5 foot with a square back so I can hook up my electric trolling motor(could put up to a 4 horse combustable motor on the back but that would be a bit scary for me).

I believe it can carry into the 700 pound range.  This is the first and only canoe i've been in but im fairly certain that it's quite abit wider than most, two people can stand up and fish in it no problem.

I could put a canoe onto a pathfinder pretty easy, if you can get it onto a car!

We use an Old Town canoe as our barge, or when we plan on fishing for larger fish... otherwise, our kayaks are sufficient when you know how to pack light and pack right.... I can fit all I need into an medium Dry Bag... plenty of space left for fishing poles, etc... I have a sit on top, BF has a sit-inside... I can carry more then him because I have the entire body to fill up, plus my bungees in the front and back... he usually ends up towing a small kayak behind him to carry the excess.. I can carry several gallons of water, a tent, a tarp, a beach table, a sleeping bag, pillows, spare shoes, tackle box, fishing poles, net, rope and a dry bag full of my toiletry's, dry clothes, towels, etc etc... more than enough space in a sit-on-top... while the north coast is cold its been doable being up in the elements... however, I think I would have a sit-inside with a spray skirt for any Alaskan adventures.

Forty some years ago I used to do a fair amount of canoeing on Michigan rivers camping and trout fishing.  Those were great days in my life as my gf and first love was into going with me. We would fish down the river and then camp and pick wild fiddlehead ferns to steam up with some fried brook and brown trout.  There wasn't many people back then and you might travel all day on the Pere Marquette river and only see a fisherman or two.  I certainly miss that life and those innocent times.

It's not hard, you can figure it all out with a little research. Just do it and learn as you go and have a lot of fun my friend. You'll remember it your whole life if you do it right.

Btw that woman who was my gf at the time is still in my life 40 years later as a friend. She lives with her husband on the most beautiful Smith River in Northern California.  That's a stellar kayaking river that can be canoed in some long stretches at certain times of the year.  That's by far and away the most beautiful river I've ever been on.  I lived on it for a year way back when I first came west and fished every day for large sea run cutthroat trout.  It was that same woman who got me out here.

Sorry to drag you down an old mans memory lane so go have fun and make your own memories.

Maverick if you plan to do any serious canoe tripping get a 17' or bigger. The 16' canoes don't cut it for gear carrying. I've heard it before, it's only a foot, but it's a foot times the width. We went out on the Allagash, this year with 2 guys that brought 16'rs and it makes a big difference.

Don't get a 16 unless you plan to go solo.

My family has three canoes. We use to always go. It was a nice thing to do as a family. Lately I've been really really thinking about camping and canoeing and I can't wait till it's warm enough. Can't wait to introduce my girlfriend to both at once. Bring some fishing poles, maybe a shotgun for small game to cook up, camping gear, some mushrooms... ahhh if only it was summer. It's been way too long since I've last canoed.

I'm friends with The_Aviator and years ago we were canoeing and we camped out at this epic campsite in the middle of nowhere along the river and took acid in the evening. Fun times...

I've done acid while canoeing up around 75 mile house in western Canada.  They were these really cool canvas canoes.  We caught kamloops trout up to 7lbs without much effort and never saw another fisherman in a week of fishing and tripping.  That was, lets see, about 30 + years ago.  Fuck have I gotten old.

Shit that sounds like fun. Dint know you were that old but seeing how wise you are I'm not surprised.

I've gone canoeing with my old man twice. Shit sucked. It was heavy and a team effort. We switched to kayaks and it's been much better.

I would love to have another canoe I had one a long long time ago. It was a blast. This past summer my son and I made a raft by tying a bunch of logs together. It was heavy as shit. We took a couple fishing poles and floated down Ohio river. Good times.

Check the C-list you can pick up an Aluminum 17'r for $3-400, they aren't pretty but it will put you on the water. I've had a great time watching my grandson growing up paddling the Allagash River in Maine for the past 7 years.

I kayak and sometimes bring my pole with to do a bit of trolling or bass fishing at times. Exploring lakes is pretty fun in my area. Tons of wildlife to watch all the time.

Haven't gotten out lately cause of the cold weather and I got stuck on a log last time, too sketchy on my own.

Back when I used to live in Seattle I used to go out on Puget Sound and buzz bomb for salmon on a kayak. A big one would tow you around.
