Starting agar. A few questions for yall

I've been looking on myco supply for everything I'm gonna need to get started. There are a few different Agars they have available. It seems that the malt extract or the potato dextrose seem to be the most fitting for my purpose. Any recommendations on those 2? And also are these Agars premixed so all I add is water?

Go cheaper and get sterilized plastic petris off ebay and then head over to your local whole foods store and pick up the ingredients for the PD(Y)A agar recipe and blend it up.
YOu can pick from any number of Recipes here, but the PDYA one is very popular and a whole band of us are doing a sporeprint to sporeprint grow using this recipe and style.

Asian food store. Find telephone brand agar. Get some light malt extract (spraymalt powder for brewers) 500ML 10g agar 10g ELME boom pour it into some presterile dishes you buy.
Malt extract agar. Good choice if you're growing on grains IMO it's a product of barley grain already so..

Dude I searched so many asain food stores in my town, but since I have such a huge variety of races here I couldn't find that shit anywhere. Just to be fair I didn't check THAI specific stores, which I believe most grocery agar products like telephone are from. I found agar agar, (along with almost every other thing I searched all over town for) at Whole Foods market, over in the global section and only 1 brand of flakes.
So OP if you go looking. I suggest Whole foods first less you know your local asian mart sells thai products.

Usually a Vietnamese or Thai specific store has agar-agar powder. Telephone brand seems to be around most places and it's very very cheap compared to health food store agar or most internet agar.

I had the same reaction when I saw Frank post that link I didn't even think that you could make agar in so many different ways.

I orderFP agar agar and mix it myself with light malt extract at whatever nutrient % that i want. It's good to have control over the nutrient content of your media so you can tweak it for different species. You can also add your own antibiotics if you need them. GL, GG
