I like my Beretta because the recoil is low (all metal) but the weight is pretty substantial with a full magazine. I might buy a Browning High Power somewhere down the line because I have a WW2 Nazi proofed one that was confiscated in Belgium during the Battle of the Bulge off a captive Nazi. It's actually an FN model based off the Browning but it's pretty much identical to the High Power. I love the thing.

Ak74 or 100 series. Buy a sporter saiga and putz with it. 500 bucks used. 5.56 or 5.45 or 7.62x39 or 7.62x54 or 308 or 30-06, they got u covered with a full proof system. Or go for the absolute kill them all and let thier respective gods sort them out and get a saiga 12. Cheap birdshot up to brenke ko slugs it can kill it all. 20 rounds of 12 pellet 00 buck shreds anything, each pellet is the size of a 9mm so u do the math. As for a pistol just get a glock, yes its tupperware but thats what u want if shtf. Thier 45 holds more rounds then a 1911 (except sti comp build) and u can buy 4 for the price of a good 1911

no such thing as stopping power

I disagree from a tactical standpoint, long guns are bad because of telegraphing, low penetration doesnt kill an intruder, it often wont slow them down much

Bear in mind what you'll have to carry that weight too. Weapon weight is negligible between models, ammo is a different story. You can carry more 5.56mm than 7.62mm.

Not to mention shooting a shotgun in the confines of your home can blow your eardrums clean out.

A 12 gauge with a short barrel even without a pistol grip is excellent for home defense. You stick a couple of birdshot in there and light someone's ass up in the dark without necessarily worrying about killing somebody in the next room. Pris, you have to be kidding me with the whole "shotguns don't slow people down" remark. That is absurd.

I just realized shotguns offer nonlethal options as well. Beanbags, rubber slug or rubber pellet. It put Knoxville down quick at 21 feet, just as deadly in close quarters
that should read less than lethal, not nonlethal.

with 00 buck it will but then you have the penetration issue, bird shot is worthless even at close range, the wadding will do more damage than the shot
someone posted a news story about a guy shot 3 times, point blank with a shotgun loaded with birdshot, it messed up his arm a bit but the shot to the chest and head did nothing but cause a bunch of shallow bleeding wounds
http://www.theboxotruth.com/docs/bot3_2.htm
Quote:
Birdshot as a Defense Load I have had a lot of questions, summed up as follows: How effective is birdshot (#4, #6, #8, etc.) as a defense load?
We have done tests with various birdshot loads. Birdshot penetrated through two pieces of drywall (representing one wall) and was stopped in the paper on the front of the second wall. The problem with birdshot is that it does not penetrate enough to be effective as a defense round. Birdshot is designed to bring down little birds.
A policeman told of seeing a guy shot at close range with a load of 12 gauge birdshot, and was not even knocked down. He was still walking around when the EMTs got there. It was an ugly, shallow wound, but did not STOP the guy. And that is what we want... to STOP the bad guy from whatever he is doing. To do this, you must have a load that will reach the vitals of the bad guy. Birdshot will not do this.
In fact, tests have shown that even #4 Buckshot lacks the necessary penetration to reach the vital organs. Only 0 Buck, 00 Buck, and 000 Buck penetrate enough to reach the vital organs.
Unless you expect to be attacked by little birds, do not use birdshot. Use 00 Buck. It will do the job.
But doesn't 00 Buck penetrate too much in interior walls to be a "safe" load in a home? Yes, it does penetrate a lot. But any load that is going to be effective will need to penetrate walls to have enough power to penetrate bad guys. If our only concern was to be sure we didn't penetrate walls, we would use BB guns. However, BB guns will not stop bad guys.

I seen the Mythbusters do an item involving shooting people at point blank range and like Prisoner said its not really convincing in the real world.

they're known as 'less than lethal' options because they can still be deadly

All this gun talk gets me excited! I am gonna go get a new one soon since I havent got one in a while. I have always wanted a Glock22 .40 which are on sale right now for $475. But I do think the S&W 500 are badass as fuck, but those are $1000, the ammo is expensive (I think $1.75 a round), and my hand/wrist would get sore real quick. Decisions decisions...

Buying a gun should be like buying a car, look at long term cost to own. With the money saved with the glock buy you can tac out like a mother fucker, high viz sight, extended magazine, spring packages make for an effective weapon platform. god I have a raging clue right no
