I bet you could find detailed records of Fallopia japonica distribution in your local counties and cross reference it with the stream database.

Interesting. I wonder if the west coast ovoids enjoy knotweed as well?

I think west coast ovoids enjoy whatever they got sprayed on/ buried in.

My buddy found these ones in a habitat similar to the wild east coast ovoids in Portland. I am not sure if he posts here or not. http://mushroomobserver.org/134376?q=1ghW7 He didn't really elaborate on the observation he posted though.

This is what he said to me. "they are naturalizing in flood plains in PDX, growing from reed canary grass stalks and buried wood. Really similar to the East coast. I found this on 4/20 this year http://mushroomobserver.org/132469?q=1bkRT"

Then there is this observation from Olympia which seems to have some debate to what it is. http://mushroomobserver.org/68553?q=1bkbD

I don't look for knotweed at all, and I've never seen it in my area.
Lots of Ovoids though.
Just sayin.

Hey this is pretty neat! I've been mapping and locating all the feeder creeks/streams into the Chattahoochee River, pinpointing floodplains and really narrowing down habitats. The area where they were found in GA (DeKalb Co.) is south of me on the Chattahoochee river. Just north of me, the river is dammed up to make Lake Lanier. They MUST be below the dam, but north of the city (ATL). Fingers crossed fellas!

I think I have spotted some knotweed here and there, but what's really invaded our streambanks in Chinese Privet. It makes huge debris piles of tiny little twiggy bits.

stevo said: I might have to gather some privet twigs for my next substrate concoction. I've been tossing a bag of this and that into a pile for a another grow attempt and I've learned a lot this way about what it likes and does not like. After seeing bluing mycelium pretty much everywhere in the knotweed patches with loads of phragmites mixed in I thought it would make good substrate but it was garbage. There has been a lot of grasses though some of which I can't even identify- that have made a good substrate. You win some you lose some. In a month or so I will make a more proffesional grow log with a variety of ingredients. What is on my list of prized materials this time of year is hazel alder cones and buttonbush berries. They seem to be reall "high octane" When mixed with the grass and a little chips it's the best!
Have you played around with coniferous wood as an admixture? A lot of my suspect habitats and the habitat where the guy found the GA ovoid have tall pines scattered intermittently.

Sometimes I'll realize things are too dry in the tub and add some old half rotted wood for the moisture. There is a swampy area behind my house where fallen pines are seasonally under water and the rest of the year dry. These logs sort of crack into litle cubes but not mush though. Anyway they are my first choice when a need a log to put on the outdoor patch or in the tub. I always notice the ones that have been waterlogged for a while have a reddish tint. The mycelium scoots along it really fastbut not densely with a lot of bluing. Also where I found the ovoids here there was a lot of pine. Directly above it was a lot of maple and sycamores but there lots of loblolly in sight so I'd say they can tolerate a little pine at least . The known places like the ohio river valley are full of pine arent they?
Idk but you mentioned loblolly (Pinus taeda) and that's what we have down this way.
