Yeah and loads of people don't like them for no reason. Ditto on the walmart/gun stores. I've seen bushmasters for sale at gander mountain for $599

I would go to a range and try a bunch to see what fits best with you.
Its more important you shoot it well than it is a bad ass gun.

What caliber did you have in mind ?
Are you thinking it would be for long distance- beyond a 100 yards ?

FruitOfLife said: I would stay away from .223 or 556 because ammo is scarce right now. I have a GSG .22 and I love it just to fuck around with but .22 ammo is the rarest to get right now (At least where I live).
Your best bet is to get a 9mm of some sort. Even a brand new one shouldnt be more than $600-$800
EDIT: If you can, get a bump fire stock. They are fun as hell, but ammo goes fast lol
22 lr is hard to find any where.

My buddy has a Rock River Arms setup that is really nice but it's well over a thousand when you include a nice scope and bipod, etc. I guess I just suggested the Mini-14 because of the simplicity by comparison with the option to expand if you wanted to.

If your going with a WWIII scenario consider that there won't be a lot of police/military presence so their arsenal is up for grabs. 9mm and .40 would be your most abundant sidearm ammo. 5.56mm and 12 gauge for your rifle/shotguns. Anything larger is a waste. Also buy American, we are the top dog when it comes to firearms. You also get competitive pricing and a wide selection, without paying import markups or getting bogged in legalities.

I hadn't done any price shopping for AR's since about a year ago when the shootings happened in Newtown and Aurora. They were inflated like crazy so I guess that's why I was so off on prices - still, AR's are very nice and fun to shoot, I still would rather just have the Mini-14 as I'm not a gun snob. I wouldn't feel as bad taking a Mini-14 out and getting it "dirty" in the woods so much.

Semi Auto AK47 by a good manufacturer. Most battle proven rifle ever, wont let you down, you could teach your kid how to use it, accurate to 1000 ft, no pussyass caliber but a big chunk of lead with a hefty scoop of powder behind it, 30 round mag, easily jungle clipped to 60.
Plus, dirt cheap.

Sorry NWlight, I don't want too highjack your thread, it would just seem strange to have two threads about the same thing active a the same time.
I have been toying with the idea of gun ownership for some time now, and I have finnaly decided to pull the trigger. (Hahaha word play ) I'm looking for a pistol at this time, later I plan to get something more but it seems a pistol would be an obvious start. Price is not at all an object, I don't plan on doing any hunting, I only want it for target practice and the potential of home invasion.

If you're looking to spend a lot on a nice target shooting pistol, look into Kimbers.
I've always wanted a Walther P99 or like a CZ 75 or something like that. I have a Beretta 92fs and it's ok, not my favorite shooter but I got a good deal on it basically. People will come in here and circle jerk about calibers now, though. I'm sure you'll hear all kinds of reasons why .45 is better than 9mm, etc, ad nauseum. Or some other kind of uncommon round. I buy guns that are cheaper to shoot and have easily available ammo. It's easy to burn up $50 worth of rounds in a couple of minutes on more "exotic" calibers.

Pistol for home invasions: If money is no object... .45 acp 1911. Lots of stopping power... Would you be able to handle the recoil?

Pistols are pretty easy to shop for, pawn shops out here sell reliable equipment for under $200 and that's for either 9mm or .45 They're not as pretty as a colt but will shoot as well
Personally I keep a can of bear spray for home defense, have had too many break ins to just shoot anyone I find in my living room.

Also, a shotgun is a good idea for home defense as well, considering you don't want to penetrate walls too much usually in that situation.

I used to have the S&W/Walther P99 in .40, not my cup of tea. The steel slide and barrel juxtaposed with the plastic lower make the recoil a particular pain in the ass. Does no favors for sight realignment either.the worst is the plastic trigger, the edge of the metal spring on the trigger is like finger nails on a chalk board. Just my 2¥. Solid piece in all other respects
